I’m using really a weird definition of punishment. That’s my fault. Maybe I should stop doing that. I’m ok with punishment if we know (or if it is at least plausible) that it’s a deterrence. I’m not ok with punishment for the sake of punish

Sure, I can understand that. The app store really needs trials. I have more than once bought an app that turned out to have a horrible UI.

It’s not the customized apps themselves that are (to my eyes) ugly – though that may sometimes be the case – it’s the inconsistencies, the lack of polish and the lack of thought that usually comes with having a customized UI.

That would actually be quite sad. I personally can’t stand customized apps. I think they are a possibility in theory but they have to be extremely – and I mean extremely – well done. The likelihood that somewhere something is screwed up or

When I say “punishment” I’m talking about everything that’s beyond mere deterrence. I have no problem with deterrence, yet no desire to punish.

The article is not really clear about that, but it sounds like the laptop was broken and had to be fixed. Given that it’s possible to buy new laptops for $300 it is certainly entirely possible that $60 are a reasonable price.

You can always use lethal force in the US against intruders? That seems wrong.

I’m always disgusted when people share those photos with the public or third parties even though doing so is clearly not necessary for recovering the stolen property. It just seems immoral to me, no matter whether you know that the thief or

Well, I’m not all that convinced of the usefulness of the ISS myself, I was trying to make a more abstract point. If there are significant scientific discoveries to be made on the ISS, the Europeans will also benefit from them.

You could call it division of labor. The US will obviously benefit from any discoveries the LHC makes, Europe will also benefit from the ISS.

By the way, do not use that Trim Enabler. If you want to and are aware of the risks, use this one, especially if you plan on using it with Lion: http://digitaldj.net/2011/07/21/trim-enabler-for-lion/ What this does is actually pretty si

Yeah, because those gestures are more akin to keyboard shortcuts, i.e. something for power users. OS X is perfectly usable without complicated gestures. Two-finger scrolling is the most complicated thing an average user has to learn. This s

Search is part of the answer but it’s not the whole deal. Some users don’t like to search, it would be disastrous to just replace everything with search. I think that tailor made libraries that leverage metadata are the other part of the an

Now, that doesn’t really change anything, does it? You know, I like the ribbon and I think it’s great UI design, at least for certain tasks, but it is very, very ugly. There has to be a better way to put the elements together.

Wait what? How could a reasonable person possibly be offended by what you quoted? There is entirely too little context there and the sentence is worded very politely. (L)GPL certainly is draconian (in the sense of strict) and all he is sayi

You can get the a file’s path by dragging it into any text field. But what do you need that for? Besides the terminal (where dragging works, too) the only use case I can think of is troubleshooting.

If your idea for changing the world includes buying all the products and services the US economy produces in one year $58m is certainly not enough. I’m just not sure what kind of plan for changing the world that is. Money is certainly handy

You can buy better toys but I very much doubt that the quality of life improves much. The difference between $100m and $700m is at any rate much, much smaller than the difference between $15m and $100m. Maybe that’s why so much has to be pa

Leading one of the most exciting tech companies on the planet is the incentive. But I really do wonder how much additional incentive all that money can offer. At a certain point it gets impossible to spend any of the additional money.

“Blunt” has different connotations for me, rudeness seems like a part of it. Saying “I don’t need to see this, let’s move on.” seems just honest to me, not blunt. “I’m bored by this, why do you tell me all this crap?” would be something I w
