That’s the point, though, isn’t it? I think Weizenbaum was pretty devastated when people actually took it serious.

“But is a Photoshop-like GUI the best UI for anything else?” It isn’t. Why should it? Is a hammer the best tool for anything but hammering? “Furthermore, don't some of those high-end packages you listed include a CLI component too?” I’m not

You are talking about possibility. I have no doubt that it’s possible to manipulate images, sound and videos with CLIs. The question is whether that would be the optimal way.

It's a bad anology if it excludes the majority of expression, though, isn't it? I'm not talking about some corner case here. Software seem too malleable to me to characterize it in such broad strokes.

"Expression" as the author defines it seems to be very narrow. Users of Photoshop or InDesign or Illustrator or Maya or Logic or Premiere Pro most definitly do express themselves, even though they are operating a GUI. GUIs are widely used f

They would be able to increase the resolution, sure. Why do you think otherwise?

That’s what the HiDPI mode suggests, though. If Apple wants to keep the size of UI elements constant (and I’m guessing they don’t want to make them larger) they have to quadruple the resolution. Anything less and they give the user less spa

You wouldn’t have to pay extra if the extra resolution were default. (You would, but I guess you know what I’m talking about.) That’s exactly what I’m talking about. Apple can’t just increase the resolution for everyone and that’s what they

I have no idea. I was mostly paraphrasing what I read in John Siracusa’s Lion review: http://arstechnica.com/apple/reviews/2011/07/mac-os-x-10-7.a...

For one model. You have to pay extra. And in the grand scheme of things it’s not a very large increase. (Besides, the OP was corrected on that point already – more than once. I didn’t think it was necessary to also correct him or her. That

Because anything beyond 1440 is uncomfortable for large numbers of people. 1680 is sort of ok but would suck as a default.

OS X doesn’t have resolution independence. That’s why the resolution is what it is. Apple tried (for years) and it was working – more or less – but with Lion they just dropped that. What they have now is a HiDPI mode which quadruples the si

Could be an internal thing. I really can’t remember Jobs ever publicly and personally taking credit for design. But maybe he did inside the company? I guess we will have to wait for the book for more context.

The opposite could also be a mistake: What if you promote that person to a position it is not qualified for? (I think the Peter Principle was already mentioned around here.)

Is there anyone who can replace Ive in his current position? If you think there’s not then you already have the answer to the question whether Ive could become CEO. His ability as a CEO doesn’t even figure into it, at least not very much. H
