Is there a site that compares (up to date) catalog sizes of the different services? Rhapsody used to have the largest, but I couldn't abide their website. Rdio has a great site, but their selection wasn't so great. Mog has been a decent com

I see the thinking behind it, but it seems like it would be a mistake to make Circles any more conceptually complex than they are now. People are already making a decision about what circles to put things in, and what circles to share thing

I'm kind of an outlier, but I really believe that context places a huge, huge part in the "superstar developer" mythos. We're very quick to overlook a lot of contributing factors in the rush to declare some developers legendary. "Outliers"

Isn't it only potentially a hell of a lot more, if Groupon stock holds its value, as opposed to cash/GOOG?

While I think I may agree with your sentiment (though maybe not your tone), I think it's kind of humorous to compare interstellar exploration and colonization with modem speeds. Edit: Curious about downvotes?

Non-physicist here. If the modulation is annual, does that imply that the Dark Matter they're detecting is stationary, relative to the Sun (meaning it orbits the Milky Way on the same path as our Sun)?

Is it? His point is about multiculturalism in our society, and using his name is a pithy (and, imo, appropriate) way to make that point.

Even without recording too loud, room can have a HUGE impact on recording. As can mic, pre-amp, mic placement, speaker cabinet, pickup selection, pick choice, string choice, playing style. I'd try to minimize or at least make transparent th

Just to add a counterpoint, I had a lot of trouble making the connection. I wasn't sure how github would map to "guitar and bass players". Is it sharing instruments used on recordings? Is it sharing what equipment you have? Is it sharing

I think it's interesting that their _entire_ DNS seems to have gone down. Seems like a pretty big failure of architecture, and given the size of prevalence of Media Temple a topic for HN.

Thanks, that's a good distinction I was overlooking. It does seem to be somewhat dependent on the network we're talking about though. Twitter swings far to the broadcast side, but Facebook seems to push the needle back towards a conversatio

I'd disagree that it's never going to be worth doing something of that scale. Protovis/D3/Raphael visualizations could easily get to that level of complexity. I've already used Protovis to display 2mb geojson files, so I think people will u

I think you're missing my point: if it's infant mortality that keeps average life expectancy down, it's false to say that "caveman" diets are optimized for only aging to 30. I think it's closer to the truth to say that cavemen either died a

Doesn't infant mortality greatly skew life expectancy? I thought I remembered reading that it's the single biggest thing we've done to increase life expectancy, meaning if a hunter-gatherer reaches adulthood, they don't have an especially s

The exception that proves the rule. I think the Python community is, to a certain degree, split on the usefulness of doctests, and in my experience most devs see them as useful documentation first, and tests second.

I'm not too deep in the NoSQL world, but isn't this article conflating MapReduce with NoSQL? NoSQL is a broad AJAX-y term, but generally I thought it was referring to schema-less/document databases, not MapReduce. You don't have to use MapR
