I have a few that saved some cost. For example turning of metrics generation for _all_ host headers on NGINX instances serving millions of users. That “feature” cost outages during security attacks and a quite significant SaaS bill, because

Side projects might be different than MVPs. I think people might start side projects on exotic technologies or ones they want to learn, while in case of MVPs, time is usually a quite significant factor, so going with what you already know m

Can you link sources for those Google numbers? I am asking because I have seen smaller platforms, but still with millions of users, and the avg. RPS was around 10-15k. Nginx is quite scalable with the right configuration and hardware, but m

The kube-prometheus-stack (helm chart) is pretty cheap to maintain. I have that plus selfhosting Loki. If you are looking for a similar setup, there’s Grafana Cloud with a generous free tier, but I haven’t tried that.

This is not really a use-case for Prometheus, as you already suggested by the lacking capabilities. APM suites have tooling tailored for this, e.g. New Relic or Sentry (but using these for this purpose only is overkill, otherwise expensive

Your use-case is not completely clear to me based on the article, but you might be better off with Prometheus’ agent approach, introduced recently: https://prometheus.io/docs/prometheus/latest/feature_flags&#x

I use it to control sound volume, and it’s convenient to check elapsed time/step slides (without the noise of hitting keys) during presentations.

Prometheus-operator is great indeed. If you like the video format, you might like this one from one of the Civo engineers, Alex: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=08O9eLJGQRM

Yes, sure I wasn’t trying to compare FAANG to Blizzard in that regard. However, there might be other aspects of working for FAANG that might be a nogo for some (e.g. privacy and/or ethical reasons), despite being state-of-art in other
