Anyone else surprised that they managed to get the IOT ticker? I would of thought that would have been taken already.

I can’t even imagine the senior product and data people I’ve listened to deciding to change this based on one artists experience.

The follow up MS project Midori has one of my favourite series of blog posts written about it http://joeduffyblog.com/2015/11/03/blogging-about-midori/

What you’re describing sounds more like TiDB. Like a MySQL flavoured cockroach DB with its own K/V store TiKV.

I agree they’re a bit strong on the sales pitch, but they’re not trying to come up with a new definition so much as bring the words usage back to its technical meaning https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Observability

Why would you reply with an anecdote to someone specifically mentioning they’ve heard plenty of anecdotes but want data?

> Personally I've always had my reservations around async, it seems a paradigm that makes things gratuitously harder. This is one of the major driving forces behind Loom being done so differently to how they’re done elsewhere. Async

No ones demanding they don’t change, they’re just stating that as users they’ll react accordingly.

I read the DDIA book in my own time and have watched some of the internal Amazon tech talks mentioned above during work time with other engineers. I think either way it’s important to realise that unless you’re superhuman you’re not really

We do but a family trust isn’t relevant to an employee’s salary. E.g his Netflix salary wouldn’t be able to go into the trust until after paying income tax on it. If he wanted to e.g invest in his wife’s name for tax reasons he could just t

This is entirely incorrect and reinforces OPs point about the obsession of some people with the inflation boogie man.

The author is describing creating a local branch too, but that branch needs to be created from a commit, which will typically be creating your local branch from the most recent master commit. e.g git checkout origin/master -b my-work

I don’t know that I’d call this modern so much as just a different school of thought. Using streaming/event buses and getting rid of the chain of calls in front of the initial request definitely has upsides. Syncing data all over the p

This is a bad faith analogy, others profiting from OSS they didn’t write themselves is a feature not a bug. Stealing from a restaurant is not.

Microsoft is surprisingly open to the actor model. They’ve had various implementations of virtual actors after publishing the research, e.g Project Orleans for .NET and Durable ~Functions~ Entities on Azure.

This is really cool, it seems similar in intent to Rust's "shared or mutable, but not both" philosophy. I hope it spreads to C# more generally somehow.

They mostly solve the same problems, albeit in very different ways. Loom is primarily about making threads cheaper, async await is primarily working around threads being too expensive.

Is there a gold standard for hosted Postgres? I’m impressed with AWS Aurora Postgres but it’s still high enough maintenance that for something simple I’ll go with DynamoDB most of the time.

Funnily enough AWS' way of doing things is quite different to Google's and I think there are pros and cons to both. Google's way is SRE as mentioned here, and I don't have experience to say more there. However, at least

I suspect while most companies say location based pay is based on cost of living, this is not actually true. Amazon is quite upfront about this, they pay based on cost of labor. I.e they pay what they need to get the staff they want in that
