I’m with you, having quit social media some 10 years ago. That said, not everybody has the ability to exercise their agency. In this social media addiction isn’t much different from any other addiction. Many folks find themselves incapable

I mostly agree, though if I could only have “what” or “why” I would choose “why” every time. To me this is similar to describing the problem in product design. I wish the “why” was more often concise enough to be the prominent feature in a

I look at commit messages every day. I actually don't love a message that just describes the code change (I can figure that out on my own if I look at it long enough). That's fine for bigger or more misleading changes, but when I&

I had to do a final project in ColdFusion in a web dev class in college (2006 I think?). It was a class where we had also used Perl, PHP and classic ASP. After that class I spent a lot more time with PHP and eventually ASP.NET, never touche

A few examples come to mind: geographic regions that already have codes or abbreviations associated with them (e.g. a FIPS code or state abbreviation in the US), simple enums (though I really only bother putting these in a table if they’re

I’m with you. Docs need to provide 2 things: the reference and specific examples. That’s it. Tell me what all the options are and what they do, then show me usage of as much realistic possibilities as possible.

Obviously that’s the ideal situation. But in cases where you’ve already deposited funds you can’t pretend you didn’t.

In some situations this is ok. But if money actually changed hands then you can’t pretend you didn’t pay someone, so you’ve got to essentially create a debt or a new check, depending on whether the new total is negative or not. And that mea

At least as far as coffee grinders go, find a reputable company that will repair them. My Baratza Encore stopped working after about a year or two of operation, and I sent it in for repairs. It was probably just a small short somewhere, but

The most useful part of writing docs for me is that they shine a spotlight the sharp edges of your product. Why is this feature so hard to document? Oh, because it sucks! Let's make it better, and then the docs will make sense too. At

I suspect a lot is determined by presentation. Explaining arrays using physical dimensions breaks down after the 3rd dimension (and even the “cube of elements” examples tend to be a bit contrived). Expressing them as categories/levels

Yeah, it ended up being one of those things you look at a second time and wonder why it seemed so hard the first time. It was a good lesson for me, though. Now when I hit something particularly dense I have a lot more patience with it.

I wish that were true. As the only teenager in my rural school even remotely interested in programming, the closest thing I had to advice came from my dad, who didn’t finish college and liked to build computers as a hobby, but who didn’t kn

My 2c—I went ahead and took the pay increase and added responsibility, then used it as an excuse to only do the most impactful thing possible at any given time. Leads to telling people “no” a lot, but also less stress.

The point I was attempting to make is I don't care what the thief does. I want the option to disable it if I've determined (on my own, with no help from anyone else!) that I'm not at a high risk of theft in the first place.

This line of argument just _irks_ me. I don't care enough about thieves for this to even matter to me. And I think this is zero-sum for the consumer. Maybe more devices get stolen (probably not, if I'm a thief I'm still snatc

Yeah, I feel that. Usually I have like a 2 hour coding block planned with something new/interesting, so it would end up being more of a workshop, like e.g. here’s how to build a really quick cron job for our k8s cluster or whatever. I
