I struggle with this—if you have kids, sometimes staying the course feels like the "responsible" thing to do. But plenty of people get laid off out of the blue, and plenty of people pursue their dream and have a thriving second ca

Yeah the answer is actually MORE meetings which are shorter and have 5 or fewer participants. I can’t tell you how many 1 hour meetings I’ve sat through with 20 people, only 2 of whom are talking.

It's true! Some people don't mind or even like climate change—don't they count? What about the flat earthers? We should have a city for them with school districts that cater to their beliefs. Some people abuse animals—where&#

I truly don't get this perspective. The value of living in a city is proximity to people and amenities. If you value something different, that's totally understandable, but why wouldn't you just move to the country?

I don't think it has anything to do with being "nerfed." It's as simple as this: the novelty has worn off. The people who don't have a direct use for it just got bored of asking it silly questions.

Yeah, I wouldn’t count on Meta contributing directly. I guess what I mean is, out of those 100M users, some will be programmers who get jazzed about ActivityPub after using Threads, and they’ll start up hobby projects or contribute to exist

ActivityPub is doing fine, but the more people who are using it, the better. We saw this with the most recent migration from Twitter to Mastodon about 6 months ago. We got more users, and that brought more developers, bug fixes, enhancement

You are 100% right that Threads users are today's AOL users, and that's a good thing. If Threads actually federates, it will be another Eternal September [0], and we need that for ActivityPub to truly thrive. [0]: https:/&

Yeah, this article reads more like a critique of the way ActivityPub and Mastodon work. None of this is particular to Meta.

I like that! I would tweak the "amount of paint" from Competence to Enthusiasm. If you have Curiosity + Enthusiasm, the rest will take care of itself. That's why a 25 year old who just learned programming is more likely to de

It all comes down to what you value—there are millions of families renting in US cities, who obviously did not feel they needed to put their dreams on hold. Although property values have gone up quite a bit in desirable neighborhoods, it&#x

Renting is also a better deal for a lot of people (no building maintenance, no special assessments, flexibility to move around more, etc). The idea that home ownership is a good investment is a crapshoot at best and a myth at worst. It work

Yes, true—the difference is, if the market stagnates you can take money out of the index fund and apply it to your mortgage at any time, whereas if you do a large down payment upfront, you can't change your mind later.

I realize this is hypothetical, but I’d run the numbers before putting that much down… If you do 20%, you can put the rest in an index fund which will probably earn more than the interest rate on the loan. (Though at this point it’s going t

I think it's a fascinating case study that LLMs are bad with numbers. It could have something to do with how these models are trained. Humans do a lot of rote memorization and learning in young life to cement numbers and basic math, bu
