Wrong, this happens all the time. For example, municipalities pay out all the time to the Westboro Baptist Church when local police are unable to defend them from the people they are intentionally enraging. (This is how WBC makes their mone

In the author's own words: I should stress that this is very hand-waving imprecise definition... I don't want to be too hard on this guy, but this is a bad article. Sorry. This article uses incorrect terms to define things. It also doesn'

The tech press needs to play up the competition to the iPad as much as possible, because drama drives clicks. But the reality is that Apple's iPad is so far ahead of everything else that it's almost out of sight. Have you used one of the 'i

One reason to have separate domains for data and functions is that it allows you to have types. If you start with the presumption that you aren't going to have types, you no longer need to make this distinction. Scotch only goes half-way. F

Looks like it was because I had a space after the comma. Oops! Why did you choose to distinguish between data constructors and functions?

What's the evaluation strategy? At first glance I thought it might be term rewriting, but it doesn't appear to be so. I don't understand what I'm allowed to pattern match. I cannot define a function like "foo(Somedata(a, b)) = a" and I don'

I'm in the Bay Area. The servers are in the Bay Area. I don't see why that's unreasonable. People don't know what they're missing now.

One effect some older gamers may have noticed over time – lag has gotten worse. I used to be able to ping 5ms to servers in the Bay Area on my old Pacific Bell DSL connection back around 1999/2000. Now I'm lucky to get 50 from Comcast. It a

Neal Stephenson's novel Anathem has a section that talks about how the 'reticulum' (the internet, in the book's fictional world) was overrun with false copies of documents with slight changes made to them. 99.99% of all of the information

The performance of some of these apps is appalling. The Sparrow GMail client idles in the background on my MacBook Air around 20 or 30% CPU usage on one core. If you try to scroll the list of mail, resize the window, or breathe on it wrong,

Important VIM tip that cheatsheets never mention for some reason: text objects. First, remember these two things: a for a, and i for 'inner'. 'daw' deletes a word under the cursor. 'diw' deletes the contents of a word (the 'inner' of a word

You've included many redundant languages while simultaneously excluding several classes of languages. Many of your other decisions seem odd. C/Pascal/Delphi are not so different from each other. C++/Java/C# are not so different from each ot

GHC Haskell actually supports mutually recursive generic container types, but you must enable type class system extensions which make type checking undecidable.
