So? I used Twitter in 2006. My tweets were like, "going to the store now." "In line at the movie theater." etc. Literally, what are you doing right now? And that's what other people used it for, too. It was popular even in 2006 and 2007, by

It's not that simple. EY's filesystem stuff is designed for read-almost-always, as you would expect for most Rails sites. GitHub does a lot of writing. Growing GitHub's setup would have been a huge undertaking for EY (from what I've read of

I think this would lead to people just slinging votes all over the place.

It was so much fun :( Has anyone suggested having it work like the down-arrow, where you can't see scores until you're above a threshold?

In case pg or anyone else is still reading this thread, I just thought I'd throw out my opinion on the experiment: Today was the best day on HN in recent memory, and by a large margin. I've followed almost all the links on the front, and th

Totally. And I hope to expose these people to Scheme :) That way, when your actual job calls for working on stuff in JavaScript (like me!), you have another perspective in your toolkit.

PLT Scheme is so easy to download and get started with. I really recommend you use that instead of JavaScript when working through The Little Schemer. http://www.plt-scheme.org/ I'm working out a problem right now for JavaScript (client-s

Yep. I have a bunch of domains with Godaddy; what are the good alternatives? (This is the sort of thing that's really hard to google for)

Of course it's a game. But it should be a game that fosters insightful comments and interesting threads, not one-liner jokes and inflammatory outbursts.

A simple number next to a post doesn't necessarily tell you much about whether or not you want to read it.

Ones near the top are some kind of product of age (more recent) and score (higher). By the way, the kind of skimming you're describing is what leads to mob voting :) People skim for the highest rated stuff, read it, then rate it up more. Pl

Does anyone know what kind of performance you can get out of this? I love the idea of a Haskell->JS compiler, but the YHC JS backend seemed petrifying in terms of efficiency (even though it's cool as hell). My current project uses Obj-J

Most Schemes give you define-macro (and gensym), which is the same as CL macros. Bigloo, Chicken, and some others even have hygienic macros off by default due to the overhead, and recommend that you use define-macro whenever possible. I usu

This sounds like it might be true until you write a large application and then type safety suddenly makes a lot of sense, even a stupid non-inferred type system like Java's.

Yeah I find that delegation makes more sense in an OO context when the states between the delegate and other object are closely entwined. TableView data source is a perfect example, basically the two states need to stay consistent with each

Most of my errors are syntax errors, not programming errors, and indeed they are annoying in WebKit/Safari/Chrome. Firefox will sometimes give me the line, sometimes it won't. The named methods and profiling do indeed work well (I wouldn't

I'm using it for my current project, currently ~6k semicolons. Stream of thought time! Forgive the sloppy writing, which will be full of interjections. Obj-J is more verbose than regular JavaScript. More use of objects and method selectors
