The captain was trained to recognize drowning by experts and years of experience. The father, on the other hand, had learned what drowning looks like by watching television. It is so strange to me that television continuously presents thi

Linkbait title. Should read, "Sad state of ActiveX requirements on the websites of major banks and government institutions in South Korea", which hasn't really changed in a while.

The visible spectrum of web tools suck. HTML and CSS are awkward. The web itself is an incredible, beautiful thing – but some of the technologies are seriously flawed and drafted by people with the wrong ideas. If I was a cabinet maker and

Who cares, if it works? I don't personally consider HTML and CSS either elegant or efficient, so if they've abstracted over it in order to do things, and it works, what's the big deal? HTML by hand seems mostly like a waste of time, to me.

This article is about setting up a computer to fetch from Gmail and store the messages locally without using IMAP. You don't want to use mutt's built-in IMAP support because it has to load a message (if it hasn't already been read) each tim

I always get a chuckle when I see this list. Other than literacy and arithmetic, it's like the curriculum from kindergarten to fourth grade.

Mine works fine. I don't know. People will look for problems in anything. I liked it better when we were complaining about actual problems, like Apple telling programmers what language they're allowed to 'originally write' in when developin

You only hear people complaining about something on the internet when it doesn't work. So it always sounds like every product launch, ever, is a complete failure. Apple's especially, since they're high-profile. So here's an opposing anecdot

This is such a minor niggle compared to not having real typesetting via TeX or something. Nothing else is even worth complaining about until these stupid eBook readers can do real (as in the non-ragged-right and non-shitty-justify) layout.

If a person cannot understand that a button will not spontaneously form on a physical panel, cannot understand the basic laws of reality and physics, then they shouldn't be let outside or out of the care of others. There is nothing you can

I have a Nexus One. The screen is really nice, I like it. But it does suck outdoors. Probably not a winner for most consumers.

I think the narrow DOF helps give laypeople a better sense of perspective and size. I'd rather see a high resolution showing of both head-on, but a shot like this does have a strong emotional aspect to it. In other words, I guess it's just

The panel used on the Droid is of the TN kind, so the viewing angle is nowhere near as good as the iPhone 4 -- the perspective difference between your left and right eye is also enough to make the screen appear different to each, which make

I hope the reader mode uses TeX for formatting or equivalent, getting tired of nasty print as more and more stuff goes digital.

Check another post I made in this thread -- there are demos on all of the pages that are silently removed if the browser can't support them. You didn't even know you were missing the most impressive ones.

Some of the demos only work in Safari. Even a nightly Chromium snapshot does not support everything that Safari does. I ran Chromium with my user agent set to Safari. And here's where it gets interesting. The demos that don't work in Chromi

I find it interesting, now that the App Store is an established brand and venue, that Apple could add this "enable installation from anywhere" option. If this had been present at the time the App Store had launched, developers would have tr
