I think about this topic a lot. I think I am fairly good at tactics: devising the "checklist" and executing on it. I don't know if I am any good at strategy. I haven't tried, and I wouldn't know where the line betwe

I did not read that same interpretation of the article. The first question was not the problem, but the sum of the incessant questions. Sure, the first question can be a good indicator for what is to follow, but I would politely suggest not

A good corollary might be: "use very specific names for custom types."

Interesting, I think it's worth noting that PG seems to be describing "engineers who learned Python after already working in Java (or similar language)". This is very different from the current bulk of engineering applicants,

Is all revenue equally valuable? Or, perhaps even if that is not true as a rule, your approximation is still useful?

Hey everyone. This is a project of mine that combines my background in Chemistry and my fascination with Rust. It also powers stoichkitweb.com[1] -- an extension of this project that I used to overcome my fear of React. [1] https:/&#x

Not exactly a game, but I made a poker chip tracker for this exact purpose[1]. It would be really interesting to see someone clone it, and see the differences! Sorry if the article is a bit hard to follow, I have been meaning to re-write it

Earlier in my career, which is not too long ago, I behaved exactly as you've described. It was not worth the risk of seeming "difficult" or "demanding" as someone with little experience, to be asking for (ostensibly

The HN comments are of course great, but what is the best way to follow the ongoing discussion of this proposal, it's merits/drawbacks and barriers to adoption? Is the working group's mailing list used for this purpose, or do

I don't believe he mentioned selling any properties he owns. I'm sure his things are safe in high end residences. I appreciate you sharing your story, but I can't imagine Brian Chesky's experience is at all relatable.

Maybe I'm not the right person to answer this, but I think your question may be too vague. I am failing to see what the friction is between scheduled tasks and an event sourced system. If a customer were logging in every day at 10am (o

At an organization as large as DoorDash, that simply isn't true for IC engineers. Their job is to implement the product requirements. It might be more sensible to provide the option to do deliveries, to the engineers who are interest

I'm sorry I don't have sources, but anecdotally, home ownership is so far out of reach for most Americans today. The common rhetoric is that "a store clerk could afford a [desirable] home for their entire family" in 1970

Is there dplyr API for pandas? That would seem like a very valuable "translation" layer for transitioning or cross language devs. Maybe there is some language barrier to implementing an elegant/faithful version in python?

It would appear, based on the outcome, that your company didn't "have" to raise the price after all. If that were the case, the outcome would have been price hike or firing the client, no?

The answer, still, is yes. But that was clear, based on the revenue numbers that prompted your question. It might be more productive to ask "how" you (and I) became so "out of touch" (relatively), and if it's such a

At first blush, I might guess "a tech backwater" would be easier to find leads. A tech hub will have so much noise and competition for those leads, even if the leads are more plentiful.

I'm not sure if you're being disingenuous or not. I use Jinja in both Flask and FastAPI, so it'd be hard to say one is "better" at that single task.

This is unfair. HTMX and Alpine could hardly be considered frameworks. React, by comparison, is absolutely massive. It's complicated. It requires compilation, and often a complex build configuration. You still need a backend server, so

Even for stateful apps, I reach for FastAPI now. It's just so expressive. For the "full stack bits" there are plenty of libraries, it's just a little work to stitch them together. This is my boilerplate: https:/&#x
