file size appears to me as a completely random metric to measure your code against. With the overhead associated with establishing a http connection, the actual byte-size is most likely of little importance. In fact, if this goes over TCP&#

I don't think that, when this sort of interaction occurs, you know the person is going to be good at writing production code. But at least you do know they're the "sort" of person you would expect to be good at it

I wouldn't call Ruby's syntax simple. Elegant, yes, but not simple. I'd consider myself a pretty seasoned rubyist, but my IDE catches syntax errors for me all the time.

"and one wrote something that looked suspiciously like COBOL - still not sure if he was trolling me." That's brilliant. Now I have to learn myself some COBOL just for that.

I imagine it should be trivial to work out an algorithm to break the deadlock. We have plenty of software systems, that needs to deal with similar problems.

Sendgrid has been in the game for a long time and has it as their core business (unlike mandrill). So I wouldn't be too afraid of them closing down overnight.

If the library site serves over plain http, it is fairly easy to snoop on the visitors activity. So one could find out which kind of books certain visitors were looking for. That could easily reveal secrets about said visitors. If we are no

The thing about gem churn is somewhat true, BUT that is a problem in any open source eco-system that I've seen so far. And in fact I think Rails fares much better in this area than most others. There are a lot of very high quality gems

For a pivot, simply take a resultset that gives three columns and map the first to the X axis, the second to the Y and the third as values. It's very often that I find myself pulling that kind of data out in reports. Making a general p
