I suppose it matters to know when the patch has been completed, so that new keys can be generated as quickly as possible. The overall tone of the post seems rather out of proportions though.

For one thing, you'd have to trust the people that you pool with by quite a stretch.

Wouldn't an UPS be useful for offsetting the power supply problem? Even just a laptop with a battery in would help you through intermittent fallouts. And for longer stretches, a diesel generator should work. What am I missing?

Europe is a diverse place - From my experience, 100K isn't unreasonable for a seasoned programmer in London or in most of scandinavia. You'd be lucky to get half that in the less well-off countries, even within EU. And outside of

It seems quite similar to gmail in it's overall design. With a bit of css handycraft, I'm sure it could be made to look reasonably pretty?

I don't think the dichotomy of static vs. dynamic is that useful really. At least not if they are taken to mean pre-compiled vs. generated directly as a response to a http request. The so-called static pages are presumably still assemb

What is this? Is it just a high res texture mapped polygon or is it some kind of ray tracing?

You should put a link to a small bio of you somewhere on the front page. You clearly know what you're doing, but the copy on the page doesn't convey this clearly, I think. Edit: OK, scratch that. I just realised that I was looking

Thanks - This is fantastic news for us. A quick calculation says we'll save about 30% on our next bill. RDS makes up a big chunk of that.

Where do you see the new pricing for RDS?

The m3 instances were already cheaper than the m1 before (as well as faster). I assume they want to get rid of the old hardware.

I thought it was an odd choice of word too. They are looking for a CTO and they are willing to give a lot of equity, because they are still early stage. But I wouldn't call my self co-founder in that role.

A ddos usually have many clients committing the attack and they are often unknowingly part part of the attack (E.g. regular users being compromised by a virus or similar). It would be impractical as well as unethical to counter attack them.

That's a bit naive though. People can always find ways to hurt you - it's a very asymmetric fight. With a complex application such as Basecamp, you can't really put everything behind a cdn.

Assuming Ada Lovelace was the first programmer, programming as a discipline is more like 160 years old.

Apparently they have been ddos'ed multiple times recently. I wouldn't have noticed, if it didn't appear on HN though. My impression is that they have people who are quite capable of dealing with these issues. I would rather h

Better yet, use timestamps. With a sequential identifier, you'll get problems in a distributed team real quick. Rails switched because of this.

Within the EU, there are some fairly favourable (for the customer) return policies mandated by law. Even if you technically extended the time for return (and that you probably aren't covered in the US), most companies here would just e

As others have said already, switching jobs (even to a more cozy/corporate position) is demanding in itself. So it may well be harder on you than just staying in your current role. You also have to consider that if you step down, the c

No, you need localisation to get traction. People are surprisingly fond of their own language, even if they are almost fluent in English. At least if you're dealing with consumers.
