Next up we hit Windows XP, which has served most of us reasonably well since 2001. It sounds sort of cool, it’s catchy, and we have no idea what it means. I thought it was commonplace knowledge within the geek community that XP was short

There is a opensource implementation of Silverlight, called moonlight. It's even endorsed by Microsoft. http://www.mono-project.com/Moonlight Besides, making browser-specific web-site implementations is still bad, even though if browser i

How about installing Silverlight and you have it for all browsers, running reasonably well in a managed JIT compiled environment instead? Not saying this isn't impressive, but I just don't see the point ;)

That might be a more userfriendly way of doing it, but my favourite way of dealing with pages like that is using Platypus with Greasemonkey to edit pages on the fly. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/737

With hulu the entire thing is a no-go if you live outside the US. In other words pretty useless to most of the internet.

Microsoft now claims about one in four computers have Silverlight installed. If this is true, Microsoft is doing better than I expected. (And I'm a .NET developer, not one of those politically opposed to Silverlight because it isn't free

Whenever I get auto-generated invitations based on systems like these I delete and ignore them or alternatively tag them as SPAM if I receive them from more than one person. It leaves me with a very negative impression of the site or servic

I think the point is more that starting up a traditional business involves much higher costs, effort and risks versus setting up some website or web-service, which pretty much any Joe Schmuck can do these days. And I completely agree with h

I'd love to order this one, but amazon.co.uk only seem to have it bundled with 5 other books, second hand, for the neat price of £170. I see from wikipedia I can get the full text for free from online, but when I'm reading books, I prefer t

In this process you are highly likely to lose either your "friendship" or your business. Given OPs description of the situation, I would put both of those terms in quotes, if not both at very least the business parts. If he is losing mone

Microsoft ditched the shit that was Classic ASP (basically MS PHP), broke clean and went with ASP.NET which is 1000% infinitely better instead. Sometimes I wonder if PHP users will ever get that lucky. They just wont give up on this crap

Looks good. I tried latest Kubuntu on my spare laptop just to see how the new KDE was. I definitely need to replace that shit with anything else (I guess KDE is just not for me). Sounds like something I could try out.

The secret to high-scalability: Make a no complexity site which does near no more than a static page, denormalize your DB because even at 2 queries max per request MySQL dries up because it can't do hash-joins, but damnit if you are going t

This is why having RSS feeds which can feed you all changes/additions to a website is a good idea. Maybe especially for abandoned websites.

While not really "news", it's interesting to see how Microsoft actually puts time and effort into non-mainstream projects like this. As for the linked article, it raises one question which had me thinking: I also pondered why another .NET

Why is the default answer always Java? This is adressed: If you have Java antibodies, you can use Flex or Silverlight. Or take a look at Cappucino.

The funny thing was how I had everything crash much more in Chrome (which was supposed to be crash proof), compared to Firefox 3 which to date has yet to hang on me once. That whole "multiple processes" hype sure was cute though.

I must admit I went back to Firefox 3, which for the record is awesome , after less than 4 hours. Haven't really used Chrome since. Might prefer that over Safari for CSS-testing, but that's it.
