similarly, search.twitter.com has had this using "(expand)" on the end of links for some time. i'm not sure if this was part of the original acquisition for that service or if they added it in after.

kind of. it's not done on the front end (js) but rather using some service on the backend. the phrasing of that is a bit weird, but they probably test until they no longer get a 301 or 302 redirect and save the result. they print this resul

the lack of china is pretty interesting. russia is practically non-existent too, but it's much larger (especially with this map projection) with a much smaller population.

i'd have to disagree. a ton of the slowdown in modern sites is due to lack of front end optimization. optimizing CSS rules is probably a waste of time, but the other basics (outlined by Steve Souders) can make a huge difference. as he says,

It's great that they're using HTML5 for their purposes, but unfortunately they still rank among the worst for supporting HTML in the actual emails. http://www.email-standards.org/ You can't even include background images in GMail.

if you can map these hashes to actual URLs, you can get rid of hashes entirely by using HTML5's history methods. see: https://developer.mozilla.org/en/DOM/Manipulating_the_browse... you can fall back on hashes for browsers without support

this answer on Quora was specifically marked as "not for reproduction" so that it wouldn't be reproduced on other sites. i guess we'll see how Quora handles such cases.
