Surprising question, as I think REST is probably the leading paradigm for public APIs. At least in terms of what people call their API. What RESTful actually is varies from person to person.

Relying on security through obscurity alone is a terrible idea, but there is absolutely a place for it. Most of us do not specifically get targeted, but will be affected by automated attacks that look at a large block of ips.

I'm always a bit suspicious when people use UUID for secrets, because there's no requirement for UUIDs to be unguessable. They just need to be unique.

Anecdotal, but my dad uses it daily though the app. I love that such a limited canvas still has use. It's not unlike twitter in that sense.

What's your definition of 'worth' though. Dev salaries are way inflated in very specific regions due to high demand and low supply. If location becomes less important, salaries will normalize... which means down if you'r

If you get a cost of living adjustment, you still live in a place with much lower cost of living which gives you way more flexibility. If 50% of income goes to rent, you burn right through your savings if you want some time off.

It's not a colloquialism, it's its modern definition. The meaning of a reduction of 10% is just historical. Meanings do change, and this one has a long time ago.

I believe that with svg, you can have multiple breakpoints and style rules depending on canvas size.

Yes, but almost any standard JSON package will map a number with decimals to their internal float. While alternative parsers exists (javascript has LosslessJSON for example), they're a pain to use. Using strings for floats only has a t

Just the other day I was looking for a full XHTML DTD to find the list of built-in entities and was so surprised about the speed. This explains a lot!

I'm not sure this is the right take, as I don't believe it's a matter of choosing to optimize for SSD vs. HDD's. Disks got faster, so the bar for baseline acceptable performance got higher.

The last large project I added Typescript, it took several weeks to add types. It took another year to learn how to write code in a way that is more likely to be successful in Typescript. If you have a ton of state, classes, high coupling a

It looks like this is not a protocol, but maybe? a Java project with adapters for different services. I'd call it a step in the right direction, but given that this can live entirely outside of Facebook infrastructure and tied to one l

This is all fair, it just sometimes feel people are a little too focused on running bash scripts, when something like `npm i create-react-app` downloads 200K lines of code, all of which can autorun. 'Read everything you download'

We're working on a large internal web application, and got huge benefits out of HTTP/2. It allows us to make smaller purpose REST api endpoints and do many calls, instead of trying to bundle everything together in larger endpoints

This is partly because REST is not a standard like GraphQL, and you can't really treat them as being equivalent. If you want a closer comparison, I think it's better to look at standards like OData, JSON:API,or even just for examp

I get that VPNs are considered more trustworthy by some (although so many also have shoddy records/ownership), but it's still 1 extra party to trust vs. just your DNS provider.
