‘So the meaning of sentience is subjective, so there can't be an objective definition acceptable to everyone and everything claiming to be sentient.‘ It feels like your begging the question here, I don’t think this follows from any of

I also say, to whatever readers may care, the reason I belabor this point so much is that obesity related health issues have a massive effect on QOL, public health and personal mental health. I say this having grown up in the southern US,

Not ignoring it - the in in calories in isn’t what you put in your mouth, it’s what you can absorb. Hence why you don’t count fiber towards your calories. Again, the digestion point seems to reinforce CICO. If you gain weight because your d

You got a source for that study? A cursory google didn’t reveal anything and 2-3x is suspect. To your second point, wouldn’t the microbiome (and slow digestion) just be another input into CICO?

Au contraire, it's very useful. If you want someone to lose weight, calculate their BMR + their rough activity based cal burn, and give 'em a 15% deficit. They'll lose weight. Not just water and glycogen. They will burn fat.

It seems like everything in that article reinforces CICO. Is there something that diverges from the CICO model that I might be missing? E.G. it’s examples of the Maasai and Inuit eating higher calories make a lot of sense when you consider

I’m from neither FL or CA, but have lived (for 5 years+) in both S Florida, SV / SF, and a brief stint in LA. The cultures from all these places felt like two sides of the same coin. Compared to my native slice of fly over America, the

No, but I kind of miss it. My Facebook years were roughly 2008-2011, and they were magical. You’d talk with your friends in a fun, async, low stress manner, look at funny posts, hear about shitty but fun local shows, post literally random b

At least to a 3rd party, it’s literally impossible to know why a colleague asks another to “slow down” without more context. I would however highly, highly recommend you 1) ask the colleague, softly, what they meant and 2) ask your manager

There are threads here debating the trade off between a) the marginal time gain from not shutting the lid pre flush and b) literally spraying less shit into the air. Truthfully, from the bottom of my heart, I love hacker news

If youre actually reflecting at this level after literally 8 months (months!!) of experience, and continue to march on, self reflect, stay motivated, don’t give up, you will eventually be a very good SWE. Your team sounds awful though.
