And more broadly, protecting the other banks in a similar situation from their own runs. I think there's a reasonable argument to be made that it'd be cheaper in the long run to stop the contagion at SVB instead of watching anoth

The ~60% is the easy to value marketable assets SVB owned. The FDIC will do the accounting over the weekend and pay out whatever they calculate is covered on Monday. The loans SVB made are less liquid and are harder to market. The FDIC wi

Again, likely ~60% of the money is coming Monday with more trickling over the next few weeks.

I don't understand why people are blowing this out of proportion. SVB had $100 billion of securities that are now worth about 70-80 billion. That plus short term securities means they've got $100 billion liquid against $170 bill

Yeah, but they bought bonds to make their numbers work. They had a choice of getting like 0.08% in overnight funds or 0.36% in short term T-bills or locking it up and getting ~3% in MBS. They chose the latter to make more money. If they

This isn't an over simplification it's just wrong. The bank does have more assets (the 1 million in cash) that balances the liability (the 1 million they owe to their customer).

This isn't true. The bank is in receivership and which is a different form of bankruptcy. The FDIC will liquidate assets or find a buyer relatively quickly. Depositors will end up getting most or all of their money back.

What are you talking about? Pretty much everyone I've seen has called this a bank run and said to get your money out since SVB announced they were trying to raise money. Techcrunch called the announcement shooting yourself in the foo

There's a difference between being bankrupt and being worthless. Bankrupt means you can't pay the bills you owe today. You can have enough assets to meet the obligations but be unable to turn them into cash fast enough. Another

That's forcing the engineer to do what they should be doing. You can blame them for not doing that but that doesn't absolve the engineer of not doing what they should be doing.

I don't think the engineer in the OP did a good job. They were the last link in the knowledge chain. It's on them to pass the knowledge along and onboard the newbies. Is it possible that they got saddled with a bunch of incompet

From what I've seen that's like saying you need to use salt to be a good cook while pouring a bucketful on a salad. Perhaps it's technically true but from what I've seen you can build pretty complex UI without useEffect

setState is a convoluted way of passing the newState to components. useEffect is a side effect and if you use it you're gonna have a bad time.

Uber has always been kind of a head scratcher. Numbers vary but they do 20-30 million rides per day. Which sounds like a lot but is only 350 rides per second. It's kind of hard to figure out how you go from 350 customers/second

I haven't been able to find great statistics, but you can look at state populations to get an idea. California, as an example, went from ~5 million to ~30 million in a few decades post WWII.
