I first read the title as "Dean Kamen takes His island off-grid" and found it amusing.

Google has an offline gmail version in beta. Requires Google Gears (not available for FF3.5, last I checked) but works for Safari. All my mail is synced locally but I can still use the Gmail interface.

#2 is definitely an interesting suggestion. I don't quite get the black market thing though. If they can't trade the points for dollars, what's the motivation for creating useless auctions? Doesn't seem like a way to launder money.

You can see the differences really clearly when switching between groups - so I think the graphic is doing its job. A table would end up being 24 x ~15 - tough to notice anything in particular as every number is going to change somewhat.

Agreed. I didn't read it until I saw this comment and I went back. Even then, I only skimmed. The combination of the first line (search bar, languages) plus the set of words that start out on the front page give a pretty good idea of what

yeah, it's a bit rough. A data point is a single event you send us - when a user plays a song, pokes someone, or makes a purchase.

I studied Mandarin for a few months, and this looks like a really cool service. Not sure if it would have a negative impact on handwriting - the repetition is really key. I have to say that the writing style aggravated me. "We were but swa

That's very true - analytics cannot entirely replace talking to you customers. We still do that all the time. They supplement each other quite well, though. Talking to your customers can help negate the form of selection bias you bring up

What value is this information to the "little guy"? If the only value is "that's interesting" then essentially nothing.

We do a few things differently than everyone else: 1. Event based tracking: the steps of your funnel don't have to be page views; you can easily track user interactions (songs played, links upvoted, etc) as funnel steps. 2. Dead simple segm

I am especially fond of near-future scifi. Reading Stross, Stephenson, and Vinge always leaves me with a feeling of wonder - their novels are brimming with technological & sociological insight. Often a novel is a thought experiment. I

To be honest I haven't seen much. I've been abroad lately, but in my first couple of years I heard very little. I haven't lived in a startup hub, so I can't really give a valid comparison.
