I'm taking the time to learn and use these tools now. (Co-pilot, etc) They appear to be more autocomplete on steroids, then programmer replacement. It will make devs more efficient, but I doubt it will replace us.

As someone close to 50 in this boat it a great question. The fact is I wanted to build a startup to get rich. That's it really. Now that I am much more finically secure (but not rich by a long shot) I'm not sure I will want to rol

The dot com crash was epic. Keep in mind it was also aligned with post Y2K. The growth in the late 90's was extreme. Both in new tech (Web, Java) and legacy systems (Y2K). Almost all companies cut IT spending to the bone for about 24 m

Compared to how it is now, it's difficult to describe just how small it was. Unless you where at a big tech company, or university it was treated as a type of office job or trade. I worked on AS/400 accounting software. (I think m

I felt exactly the same way. Very, very hard until the kids are in school full time. But still hard until they are teenagers. I'm finding the teenage years to be much more pleasant. Getting some payback for all the time invested. I kno

I could not agree more. You can't compare raw salary numbers. You need to compare total lifestyle / purchasing power. It's a totally different game now. Job security is gone in both directions. Oh and the world in general is

That just isn't true in my case. I started my career in the late 90s and was the young kid at the office. So on my network is full of older developers. Very few of them have been pushed out of the field. Yes many moved up, but the majo

Yes 125 CAD/ 40 hours a week "Contracting" is very doable in Canada. Especially for a USA company.

Yes, it all leads back to the park. The only problem now, is the park isn't big enough! Imagine the amount of money a third park in America would make. (And cost)

I can see why it's being taken care of. A town with Tide Water access on Canada's west coast could be very very valuable.

Employee dorms are a real thing here in North America. After college I had a friend working at in the town of Lake Louise Alberta. This is located in a national park and the number of homes are extremely limited and very expensive. Visiting

Thanks for that link. Just got back from Ontario, I'm really surprised that wind generation is so low, they have a lot of wind turbines in south western Ontario. On my hour long drive to the beach I could almost always see one. I saw l

It's a great problem to have. I think many of us here are in a similar position. Nice comfy jobs, well paid with no chance of promotion. I've been at mine for over a decade. I know it's going to be bad when its over, however

Parent of a teen, one anecdote to add. You see what all your friends are doing all the time. Every gathering or event that you where not a part of you see, sometimes in real time. People hate being excluded, and this greatly amplifies this

Wow, as a guy I have a 1/5 chance of not even making it to retirement. (65) 1/3 chance of not living past 75. These are not good odds.

It's only lying if you ever admit it. It's a good exercise in critical thinking. Our teenager keeps on trying to get us to say Santa isn't real. Not going to happen.

I'm not sure if I'm dyslexic, but I do have a horrible time reading. The hardest thing is reading stuff I have written. I just get anxious, and find it tiring. I would often check in some very embarrassing typos. The best trick I
