Basically, "the more the better". In lieu of a summary, let me try to see if I understand it. The deck is more random: the more times you shuffle, the more cuts you make, and the more you randomize the size of your cuts. To draw my own conc

Technically, I don't think that Verizon is a neutral carrier. Not with a clause like this. I've been a Verizon customer for a while now, and they've not removed anything off-topic of mine. Then again, I doubt I've been vociferously complain

I must say, the value of the dollar is depressing. Take a gander at this comparison I did of the Yen and Yuan compared to the dollar (btw, falling is a bad thing in this chart!)... > http://finance.yahoo.com/echarts?s=CNY=X#chart3:symb

In Opera and Firefox nothing happens, and it's quirky in Chrome. IE is hopeless. Safari-centric web design does no one good.

AllChars on a Windows laptop is a total lifesaver! I lost all my escape codes due to disuse and had to resort to the character viewer.

I use Google products, but not that much. The simple point is to: opt out of what you don't need. I use GMail, predominantly, and beyond that don't have much other information associated with my account. Privacy online isn't threatened by

Quite so, my Studio 1555 is a 65W unit and my LCD monitor is now aging. Even with my 60W Acer AL1916W drawing power I use less than the Mac Mini would. And when I don't need it I turn off the LCD. Doing a little math based off my electrical

I hate cellphones, but I'm not a senior citizen, and am not any less educated than the "adopters". I despise cellphones because I grew up with a father that had one. I was fortunate enough that, at that time, Dad could come home for lunch .

Most people can drive their cars for years and years, because they give it the right maintenance and fuel. But somehow, they give their bodies almost no care, terrible fuel, and expect equivalent mileage? There's no replacement for preventi

I'll be imprudent: What is this talk of 'release'? Klingons do not make software 'releases'. Our software 'escapes' leaving a bloody trail of designers and quality assurance people in its wake. http://gradha.sdf-eu.org/textos/kl

I wish I knew of such a study. I haven't had any time to dig with lately, or I would cite it fondly. (I enjoy postulating things and then later reading a confirming study.)

I accept the realities of placebos and nocebos. I dispute the manner and clarity in which it was described and communicated in, however. I postulate that the recent article on luckiness is the same factor: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?

Semantics, yes, but also science. It comes from the same cause, the human mind, and is therefore the very same effect. If both positive and negative expectations affect us in such strong manners, why shouldn't we be honest in our semantics?

This science and title is misleading. Placebo and nocebo are terms for both sides of one effect: suggestibility. If told they were testing a drug, warned of its side effects, and then given a sugar pill, then of course the mind (which was t

It's kinda hard to abandon your worldview to study knowledge, when your paradigm dictates what that knowledge means to you. I am holding a butter knife to my imaginary 3D-scanner: you have 64px^3 of the resultant image to determine the natu

I think that there must be an exception for certain crimes, but not all crimes. Otherwise, a murderer, rapist, thief, corporate spy, hacker, etc, could claim that they didn't know it was illegal and probably get off the hook.

Debt is effective slavery. Ask anyone that has a second mortgage and two car payments. Is their job to blame? No way! Their spending put them into literal slavery to a financial institution.

I pity people with memory like this. Unlike the author, I don't forget the code I wrote yesterday and can still explain and understand it. It takes several months for the meaning of my normal code to slip my mind. Maybe I'm just different .
