For niche markets, I recommend reading "Start Small Stay Small" by Rob Walling. You'll have to keep a critical eye while reading, but it will give you a basic canvas to iterate on.

When I was a student, I programmed KBlade, a KDE 1.x (C++/Qt) frontend to the MP3 encoder Bladeenc. I discovered later by pure luck that the software was distributed in Suse Linux. I was proud :)
