Imho Maven, despite its wide range of plugins and extentions mechanisms, is quite "convention over configuration" (cought cought) and really is made for projects that can adapt to its conventions, and to the popular Java artifacts layouts.

Lots of apps does not work with OpenJDK, I wonder how the "open" JDK differs from the "official" one. That's not real open-source to me (at least, not in the spirit). But I agree, the JVM is evolving in the right direction, maybe too slowly

I was like you a long time ago ;) I hated JEE until I used JEE5 in a project with really good programming peers. Once you understand and adapt to the JEE vision and do not fight it, life is more beutifull. If a lightweight is needed, Nginx+

If you don't cleanly separate, the day you'll want to write an another client (Android, iOS) you'll loose a lot of valuable time refactoring or worse, duplicating code. Separation of concerns is a good reason, too. Spring MVC is also fine,

Java is not making a comeback. I searched real hard remote JEE6/Play friendly startups, and now I'm learning Ror (interesting framework, I love gems) to adapt to the market.
