If I weren't technical I would go to a local university. I would contract someone who is well published in something with a combination of math and computer science to screen my hires for people he would consider for his lab, and assume tha

Well, having done exactly that, you really do need a rewrite or fundamental refactoring. It will touch most functions in your codebase. Memory mapped won't help when you have a 100gb+ file, and as you say it gets slow as it's definitely not

Why is it people don't understand that all groups have different means given large enough N. Statistical significance has nothing to do with the magnitude of difference. Effect size is what you are looking for which looks at the magnitude o

The biggest problem is that the design decisisons of some of the projects listed are pretty poor. Who decided that dataset size should be limited to available memory? Not only does this mean you have a severe limitation to the framework, bu

Great point. I personally believe in the paid model, but if I were to try an ad-supported model I would do just as you suggested.

You tweet essentially saying "its for charity, and if you want to be charitable let me know". If he doesn't respond, he looks like he doesn't want to be charitable, to the public. This is sort of like blackmail imho.

Yes we are talking about numenta. http://numenta.com/for-developers/education/htm-related-pape... Unfortunately the three (why aren't there more?) independent papers didn't use HTM, and certainly don't answer all my questions.

I think it's this: "I could walk away from tarsnap tomorrow (or get hit by a bus) and tarsnap would keep on running and making a profit." To me that's a fundamental understanding of business and is worrying.

It certainly would be interesting to go through crunchbase and do some exit analysis for each of the companies. I would hypothesise that there would be a really high failure rate of companies who do not charge. Conversely a "huge exit" rate

I have taken a look at the website. Apart from hype there is nothing that I have seen that makes me want to use it for any AI (which I do a lot of commercially). How does it compare to other architectures? What sort of problems does it exce

I think the second word is the issue: commodity implies stagnation. If you have innovation, there is always a moving target, and thus the ability to charge. Making replicas isn't a good business model. Creating something new and capitalisin

Similar to optimisation theory, each skill has positive and negative effects on other skills. This has been thoroughly explored in fields such as profit maximisation and breeding, but little has been done in sports.

Perhaps. I am sick of this "Yes, it is a myth. Calories in versus calories out. It's as simple as that." being portrayed by people as a fact. It's just not so simple, and it's wrong. I could write long winded responses with references. The

I am not really surprised at this. If you ask for money with a good product, people often pay. A fact that seemed to be lost on many in the tech community in the last few years.

You do realise that industry has tons and tons of research that has never been published. Most academics I know have never searched the patent database, which is only the tip of the iceberg.

If you are doing any sort of data analysis you really need to avoid spreadsheets. Unfortunately, most data analysis is just as bad. I have worked with SAS & R code, thousands of lines long, all without a single test. Basically a big ser
