Always good to see such well reasoned technical discussion here on HN. You make a particularly well-reasoned point about the text in the title and how it affects the technical aspects of the VM.

Why would people "panic" if Oracle builds them a better VM or the tools to build a better Ruby/Python/Java VM? It's quite different to the CLR. The CLR lets you implement any language you like, as long as it can bas

Pick Scala if: -You think a fusion of OO and functional programming is the way of the future -Runtime tooling and advanced instrumentation support matter to you -You like having first-class IDE support -You want to work for the li

Ok, I see. Technically a JIT compiles to native code too, so for a long running app there shouldn't be much difference. Both Go and Java are garbage collected, but the JVM has the more sophisticated GC.

A quick look at the language benchmark game, and Go varies between 7x slower than Java and approx. the same speed as Java (varies by test): http://benchmarksgame.alioth.debian.org/u64q/benchmark.php?t... I fail to see

With Go using 20 times less memory, I'd take Go any day since I can just throw in 20 more processes and up my throughput 5-10x. But of course, scaling like this takes a bit of design and the processes have to share nothing. That does

I have used OpenHashMap, but the results are mixed sometimes is much faster, other times it's much slower. It really depends on the use case.

Scala's immutable hashmap is about 4-5x slower than ju.HashMap for reads and 6-7x slower for inserts.

Version compatibility is definitely a pain point, but as painful as that is I'd still pick that over using regular Java.

Put and lookup are much slower vs ju.HashMap. For most use cases where the system is already multithreaded the parallel collections don't gain us anything. If you have a large read-only map being read by multiple threads (doing random

I guess it depends on your team. We didn't have much trouble with Java guys picking up Scala very quickly. Scala performance is on par with Java if you keep your wits about you, but you do have to be mindful of the code you write. Scal

After learning and using Scala there is no way I would ever voluntarily choose to use Java over Scala. Simply put it's a better Java than Java. I really like the new site design, not all that bothered about the logo. Maybe Scala need
