I don't really use Cobol, just illustrating a point :)

As is clear from the article there are many dangers of sticking with outdated technology. Resist change enough times and eventually it becomes virtually impossible to find anyone with the knowledge or the willingness to maintain your ancien

I write all my web apps on Cobol, with formal specifications for every piece of code. This Java/.NET/javascript/Rails/Python thing is just a fad. Everyone will come round back to Cobol, wait and see. Mark my words...

Our team's experience was extremely similar. I almost did a quick check to see if any of my co-workers was on HN and had your username. Uncanny.

It's perhaps better to look at other examples such as Twitter [1] and Foursquare. The Yammer issues largely focused on extreme edge cases for performance, which have been improved in 2.10. It's not hard to write Scala code which r

The IntelliJ Scala plugin is actually very good. We didn't have any strict conventions, just code reviews and good taste. Our devs didn't have any major trouble, but your experience may be different.

Java is simpler than both C# and Scala, yet it is more disliked than both (see recent HN polls).

In my experience it's pretty easy to find Java developers who can be productive in Scala. They already know the class libraries and the tooling/JVM.

The list was limited to languages that developers actually like. Java is widely used, but not particularly popular as evidenced by recent polls here on HN.

I expect Go to take a large bite out of Ruby and Python and a nibble of of Java.

Static typing + type inference is a powerful combination. Go, Scala and Rust are particularly appealing as the mix expressiveness with good performance.

Very irritating, had to follow the link to another article to find the actual country: http://www.3ders.org/articles/20130513-w-afate-a-3d-printer-... Another one of those "Republic of Africa" articles.

The US is a country. France is a country, so is Germany. How is that "not fair"? Should France's results be broken out by province or Australia by state?

The Java language itself is pretty verbose. There's a reason why "trendy" developers on the JVM have long since moved on to Scala.
