I miss read the title as “colleagues” and was trying to remember how many former coworkers I’m friends with. Surprisingly few, considering I have 20 years in the industry and spent 8 hours a day with some of these people.

I'm in Vancouver as well and can confirm. Salaries have been inching up over the years but they are not nearly the same as say across the border in Washington. The real estate cost however, is very much on par with cities like Seattle

I find building things is really rewarding. It's who I am, and that's what I'm good at. I write software at work and I write software after work. The rewarding thing about building anything is having people find it useful and

Thanks for sharing. If you don't mind a couple of questions: - is the compensation worth it? - do you think this is going to be a long term thing for you (burning the candle at both ends)?

Great question, I've taken some of these books down to read later. I was fascinated by The Pentagon Wars [0]. Arguably US Military is one of the biggest bureaucracies that spends tons of money on R&D projects. Apart from describing

Me and my wife set aside about half an hour each week to "check in". I hate to compare it to a stand up, but it's kinda what it is. The goal is to focus 100% on each other and talk about the week and do some sort of a "m

Well said. It’s similar to automated testing. We all agree it’s a must. Lots of hand waving around how important it is, and everyone agrees! I’d say that about 50% of the projects that I’ve been on lacked automated testing. For reasons. I’d
