How does the accounting work for those losses? ie is $422M = (Total $ from homes sold in Q3) - (Total cost of buying/renovating those homes), or is it (Total $ from homes sold in Q3) - (Total $ from homes purchased in Q3)?

I think reason he gives about gatekeeping is only weakly related to the bulk of the article. The point is that job listings shouldn't be arbitrarily specific is an obvious one that most already agree with, and was a thin excuse to show

This was pretty stupid straw-man. I doubt anyone who has used Prophet is under any illusions as to what it is doing under the hood (after all, the only input is a single time series dataframe...). Companies use it to do quarterly/yearl

I don't think most people conceptualize commutes in terms of distance, but rather time. So if commutes are now faster, people will move further out into areas that previously were less developed ie require new/more roads.

The top comment thread from the last time this was posted[1] pretty succinctly explains why the premise of the article is wrong. [1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19025386

That's because for many there is no consistent principle underlying their criticisms, they start with a list of companies they like/dislike or view as with/against them and work backwards.

Agreed. If Ring doorbell cameras were giving bogus probable cause at the rate these dogs were, the NYT would be all over it. But because it's not novel no reporters can be bothered to write about it...

I think that attitude is the root of our current political morass. The primary motivation is the desire to hurt those that we dislike/view as The Other, and we'll happily bend any logic or principles it takes to justify it.

Yeah, the implicit tone of this article is "check out this foreign curiosity, isn't it so weird?" similar to the articles about rental families in Japan. The Guardian can fuck off.

My intention was less "what about this other bad thing" and more do we have an objective/consensus answer on what content should be promoted, or is it just who/what is doing the promotion.

I think that it is a trap to feel like all time needs to be productive. Not only is it an unachievable ideal, it also makes time spent doing "unproductive" stuff less restorative.
