It's a bit confusing; 2 paragraphs above that line: "Next, iOS and iPadOS will use new applications of cryptography to help limit the spread of CSAM online, while designing for user privacy." That implies macOS isn't get

Since it concerns iCloud, it probably depends on your Apple ID region. But I don't think Apple has stated anything conclusive.

It's generally just a tiny portion of hard core Mac fans. The vast, vast majority of users (most of which use Windows) doesn't care at all.

Well, I guess it's hard to care about (platform-)native apps and toolkits when cross-platform apps are generally winning these days (VSCode, Figma etc.) over native Mac apps, even on macOS itself. Plus most new apps by Apple these da

Apple's system only concerns exact hash matches, and is built so transformed images hash to the same number.

'Similar' hashes wouldn't do anything; the system hashes perceptually similar images (cropped, resized etc.) to the same hash.

No, manual review only happens after the threshold is reached. Meaning, there is a 1 in a trillion chance that threshold-number of images are manually verified by Apple.

Does every post about Facebook have to result in a massive circle jerking of comments? These get tiring to read every time. Almost none of the comments right now offer any substance at all, just mindless sound bites and jokes.

What I meant and the interview is saying is that they haven't ever scanned 'iCloud Photo Library'. As you point out, they were (still are?) scanning iCloud emails (only on warrant?), and of course are providing iCloud backups

WhatsApp does by default save received images to your photo library (as opposed to e.g. iMessage). You can turn that off, though. And the permission to read from a user's photo library (to e.g. post images) includes the ability to writ

This is not the kind of algorithm that Apple is be using. That one only scans for already known CSAM in NCMEC's database.

I mean, that same situation already applies right now without this system being deployed. China already can mandate Apple to scan all iCloud or on-device photos for certain images etc. if they wanted to.

They explicitly don't want to implement it server-side due to the privacy concerns of decrypting every image in iCloud Photos. Doing it on-device limits Apple's possession of decrypted photos to those likely to be CSAM.
