A person is responsible for their own mental condition. Period. That is what this placebo situation demonstrates, more than anything. YOU are responsible for YOUR condition.

I think it solves an ego inefficiency more than a market one. If it solved a market one, we wouldn't know until well and truly after a market had been established and true scales of economy observed. So far that hasn't happened yet.

Bomb detectors are designed to pick up traces of nitrates, the theory being that if you are making a DIY bomb, you're going to go the ammonia-nitrate route. Nitrates exist in fertilizer - and thats what folks make bombs out of. Weed is ofte

While I concur that the Cult of Personality problem is pretty high in the Ruby world, I would like to say that I'm not a Ruby programmer, and really wasn't very interested in Ruby at all .. until I encountered _why's "shoooes" project. I h

As a professional C coder for 20+ years, with well over a million lines of code under my belt, I can tell you that anyone that is ignoring warnings because of a buggy compiler is using the wrong compiler and should fix that immediately . I

How to avoid (if you're a C programmer) writing utterly terrible code - always include these WARNINGS in your build step: WARNINGS := -Wall -W -Wunused-parameter -Wmissing-declarations WARNINGS += -Wstrict-prototypes -Wmissing-prototypes -W

I dunno, I've done a lot of work with SVG, and I find the verbosity to be quite useful. It really depends on how you decide to use it - for me, its an excellent container format once you have coded a little controller-view abstraction. For

I remember being able to load images in a browser for the first time. My first thought was "uh oh" .. then my next thought was "wonder if I can use this to go to nntp://alt.binaries.pictures..." My how far we've come.

I absolutely despise 'location aware' software that assumes that because I've crossed the border, I want to speak that language. It happens to me with my iPhone all the time and its bothersome, frankly.

One thing that I have found that helps with exactly this situation, and I have suffered it as well over the years, is to move your focus from one end of the spectrum to the other. That is, if you have to spend your daylight hours grokking

One thing Microsoft has that Google doesn't: the ability to keep working even when the 'net goes down. People who think the 'net doesn't go down: haven't used it long enough, in a production environment.
