> Building a secure, scalable, sufficiently decentralized distributed computer system is hard. Yep. This blockchain/PoW/PoS way they’ve come up with to do it, with a built in cryptocurrency, doesn’t really cut it. The trade off

Email was a massive hit from day 1 on the Arpanet. Whereas crypto still struggles to do anything novel or get popular with anyone outside of speculation.

The fundamental issue remains though. It’s all that legal framework off-chain that implements and enforces property rights in the real world. Having the data on chain doesn’t really help anything. All that matters is who the authority cho

Well loads of right wingers complaining here because their so left wing. You’re complaining they’re not so left wing they’re pro Russia. On the face of it they seem to be doing the right thing cos both extremes are pissed off with them.

CDJs still are the go-to thing for 90% of DJs though. The difference is, being a digital thing with some sort of basic computer in them, they keep updating them. So your CDJ1000’s with no support for USB drives are worth very little. Pione

While I appreciate the sentiment behind this, managing and organising a local collection of digital files is a lot of hassle which is why I was happy to ditch it for streaming.

Whut? Give me that sweet digital time stretching over analog pitches up/down on a turntable which affects the tone. Preference I guess.

Been DJing and running our own sound for years and years. You 100% can get feedback from the sound when DJing. It’s guaranteed if you’ve enough bass. We put the decks on concrete slabs which in turn are on 4 squash balls to deal with it.

This is simply not true. Nyquist’s sampling theorem tells us that sound sampled at 44kHz will reproduce all frequencies in the range of human hearing. There is no “quantization”. https://youtu.be/cIQ9IXSUzuM Further the ac

I think the phraseology that conveys this best is that records are worse at reproducing the original signal than digital. But the result, while a less accurate reproduction, might aesthetically be more pleasing to some. The only thing we

They messed up from what I read. Most banks would have a variety of bonds, long and short term, with varying yeilds. Esp. given the rise of inflation took a little while and it wasn’t unlikely rates would rise. SVB putting so much into lon

NATs at very least complicate things. Even if you never allow anything in from outside that wasn’t established from the inside first, it still removes an added layer of complexity from things.

QUIC involves encryption though. If that’s not needed in a given scenario the overhead might not be desirable. But otherwise, yes, it addresses many of these problems.

I think the central thing here is you need to trust the DNS anyway. If you control a domains DNS records you can get a Cert issued for that name under the existing WebPKI. Given that scenario the current CA setup just adds many more enti

There absolutely were. In the early 90s the telco guys were sure ATM was the true way, and IP was just gonna die off as it gained adoption.

The 3GPP is 100% bellhead culturally. Sure they eventually mandated all-IP core, but the overall approach still reeks of the old telco, voice-dominated approach. They’re still trying to resist the idea of the “dumb network”.

This is it 100%. Vinyl and Film may technically be less accurate at reproducing the original, but the ways in which they are imperfect gives them a “feel” which many like.

Doesn’t colour film have different layers of emulsion sensitive to different wavelengths of light? That’s not so different from digital having RGB filters right?

Sure any kind of frame rate conversion makes it worse, but lots of 24fps footage has visible judder. The camera can pan fast and the frame rate is too low to show fluidly. It’s part of the 24fps look, and film makers need to be aware and a

They “hold up” just fine to higher-res scans. Perhaps won’t reveal more detail, but there is no real issue in general with scanning them at higher resolution.

I’m not really sure it’s a “leaky abstraction”. Technical detail or something, I fail to see how it’s an abstraction to have this constraint in the WiFi standard.
