I've actually thought about this. But there are cases when mergers can help customers. E.g. when a vertical merger happens, that can absorb some of the profit margins between a supplier and manufacturer. Ideally, regulators should anal

This line of reasoning can also be used to argue that dictatorships are inevitable, and democracies would never survive against them. Dictators can mobilize vast resources for war, while democracies will suffer in internal conflicts. Our pr

I don't agree. If it was invented today, you'd have the same fear-mongering, the same lobbying from the coal industry. In addition, you'd also be lacking the decades of safety data that we can use to turn the tide.

The problem is perception. It has the word "nuclear" which, along with the mechanism, associates it with nuclear bombs. Not to mention, we react to large incidents with lots of fatality much more strongly than the same fatality sp

I have a very dumb question: why does the article use `find` with `printf` and depth specification, as opposed to the simpler `ls -a`? I'm assuming it has something to do with portability, but `ls -a` is already in POSIX. I'm a bi

The normal method for computing digits of pi is not O(n), so this could still be interesting. I think it's probably better to compare this with the BBP formula [1]. The commonly used algorithm for pi I think still takes O(n log^3 n) ti

Right, but that argument can be used to stop the inclusion of _any_ new large functionality in the kernel. Neither the Linux users nor the maintainers are currently interested in a feature-freeze of the kernel. If you want a micro-kernel, L

Another reason for using almost monospace: international languages. Many indic languages simply don't have good monospace fonts. It's not easy to design. They stick out in code, as a result. But I've always wondered if allowi
