I think this is wide of the mark. Smalltalk has a filesystem: the global dictionary. Sure, it's flat, but so was the root directory in DOS 1 and CP/M. See Self for an evolution of this idea toward something better. Smalltalk has a

Hard to tell whether it supports proper tail calls or not. The readme mentions Scheme, so it's not impossible I suppose! One of the nice things about wasm is the formal semantics; a project like this could benefit from one of those, to

I should add that the WebSub (previously PubSubHubBub) spec goes some way toward spackling over the gap between raw webhooks and what's needed for long-lived TCP-like relationships. https://www.w3.org/TR/websub

A webhook is (ok, squint really hard) a bit like one direction of a TCP connection: state at the sender tracking what the receiver has seen, state at the receiver for rejecting duplicates, logic for retrying and acknowledging receipt. The

Most of the time, we don't care about messages: we care about replicating (selected portions) of state among stateful entities. The language primitives we've settled on - variants on message passing - don't address this need

Try building a Smalltalk-like language. It throws a different set of concerns into relief, and besides, it's a better design.

Names are (not-so-) strange attractors. To me, "Elk" in this kind of a setting is "Elk Scheme - the Extension Language Kit"! [1, 2] [1]: http://sam.zoy.org/elk/ [2]: http://www-rn.informa

That would have solved my immediate problem, but the result is not distributable, so it wouldn't solve it generally, for others suffering the same thing.

I suspect it's both. But I didn't measure, because the patch does away with both sources of overhead at the same time :-)

Note that the patch does something other than what Michał's post ends up doing: instead of linking libbfd, it replaces lots of calls to addr2line with a single long-running call to addr2line. If you want to try the patch on Ubuntu, I r

addr2line already does this, and it's exactly what TFA is making use of to get the speedup.

Steinar Gunderson (who suggested [1] the talk-through-a-pipe approach) just now compared [2] the `libbfd` variant to the pipe-to-`addr2line` version, and found them to take similar amounts of time. This agrees with what I saw in `top` while

I should also say that of course you can do all this stuff in Erlang alone. Or in any other actor system. But you'll very likely end up greenspunning yourself something very similar to what syndicated actors offer, once your actor sy
