I think the confusion might be coming from mixing "instructions" with "operations", which are not equivalent especially since we are discussing SIMD which packs in multiple operations (single instruction operating on mul

Vectorisation is not free, There is one other dimension to optimise for: power. The suggested "slower" optimisation does fundamentally use less instructions. Chucking more hardware at parallelisable problems makes it run faster

I think this behaviour can also be inline with the other side of the problem though: Employees perception of growth: it's easy to feel like you are learning more when it's something brand new because of how easy any topic is at th

Thanks! Strangely I wouldn't have guessed the 8086 had anything resembling microcode, even though when I think about it there are obvious examples of earlier microcoded CPUs - My understanding is definitely too vague, I wasn't eve

Half a decade is a long wait for entertainment, people will find other interests to replace them, like bass guitar - at which point there is less mind-space available for interactive entertainment. It's taken time for people to grow sp

You are quoting the name of the company, who's name is 37 years old, not the current state of it's technology. It's true it was originally RISC, and is still somewhat RISC, but it's also true it's acquired many deci

It's a good point, a 2nd hand market assumes the availability of a cost effective battery replacement or serious maintenance scheme... it's not exactly on the same scale as a cam belt change which is the common todo upon acquiring

I both love and hate this. I'm all for anti-fingerprinting, but i'm also for interactive graphics on the web, and getImageData() is essentially your way of accessing a pixel buffer... I would be better if it was more conditional.

I've come across a number of HN commenters claiming US healthcare is better than the EU or UK. I'd argue it's pretty broken compared to both. The UK's NHS is far from perfect yet serves the majority of people well withou

I own an XPS, it runs Debian, it only installs updates when I tell it to. Even if I decided to use the untended upgrades package, it wouldn't do it when I sleep the computer... that would just be stupid.
