No, because such returns aren't scalable. According to industry rumors, RenTech is somewhere between $10-20bn AUM (assets under management, i.e. the capital used for trading), and the profit that they make, they can't reinvest, th

No, C++ is useful if you want to work in HFT (where you're paid $$$ if you're a programmer). For quants (progression towards a trader / portfolio manager), Python / Matlab / R is enough.

What “problems in society” lead to this? Humans are infinitely adaptable and we live on a hedonic treadmill. Regardless of material and/or social circumstances, there’s gonna be a subset of people who will continue to find existence a

Does anyone's insurance go down ? If not, it's just an excuse by insurance companies to make more money.

Yes this is what top hedge funds do. Non-competes are enforceable while working for the company (obviously lol), so they just ... keep you working for the company, paying you salary+bonus! (E.g. 1 year+ for Citadel, 3 years for RenTech...

Right, I wrote the above comment in a way that implied I blame the experts; I didn't actually mean that, by first approximation my "most likely" belief is simply that experts don't help at all . But it's not hard t

My interpretation is the exact opposite. Our society (well, the US and increasingly Europe where I’m from) has put a lot of resources and effort into mental health, largely by following “expert” recommendations. Tons of people are being tre

Do you know of any direct drive motors? One of the cheapest low-gear-ratios I found was the RMD series: (which is 1:6 or 1:10 gear ratio). https://ozrobotics.com/shop/myactuator-rmd-x4-16-micro-motor...

How would you attempt “conflict resolution” with primary school bullies? Sometimes the only resolution to violence is (threat of) superior violence. If you’re a child and a group of kids attacks you, that’s “adults resolving the situation”.

What do you mean? In the adult world, you'd just call the police. In the child world, sometimes you tell the adults, but they don't do anything, and the abuse continues. That's at least my experience with bullying in primary

Switzerland isn't the most progressive of countries (it only gave women the right to vote in 1971) but AFAIK you don't go to jail if you fuck a man in the ass, in contrast to UAE. Not something that directly concerns me, but I

It might vary by canton, I’m in Zürich. https://archive.is/7g3A9 Yeah you can buy the mobile AC unit, but none of the new-builds in the past 10+ years come with a built-in (fixed) unit.

The issue with people dying from heat waves has nothing to do with climate change. The issue is that Switzerland outlawed air conditioning for private homes (still allowed in shopping centres though!)

The real world is much more complicated that mathematical models. But if your business goes bankrupt with probability 100% with even a simplified mathematical model, I wouldn't want to invest in it.

This is how it already works in e.g. foreign bribery for UK and US companies. Executives just “letting” it happen is a crime, they have to explicitly ensure employees are educated and told not to do it. Source: I worked in finance where we

I don’t ”believe” in math, I can prove it. If you don’t sell at break even, it’s not a martingale, so the Law doesn’t apply.

Mathematically, if you sell insurance at break even, you're guaranteed to go bankrupt - on an infinite time scale, the "spike" of a random walk martingale (this last word means, it doesn't make a profit) will exceed ever
