Is there a better option to reach beginner-intermediate level? I am going to have to learn French from scratch in about a month and I'm finding the prospect daunting.

Github is probably past the stage of premature optimization. Presume (for argument's sake) that we accept the premise that foreign keys do not scale. Then the question is whether there exists some sort of realistic migration strategy o

It might vary by state? CA DMV around the Bay Area is horrible, but New York is quite pleasant.

Every feature controls one "dimension" of a language, and can be freely combined with other features that control other "dimensions" without worrying about how they interact. I am quoting the word "dimension",

Don't you guys (which is definitely Facebook) use some sort of extensions that makes it not the same as a vanilla Mercurial repository?

Ruby isn't an approved language at Google, I haven't heard it being talked about almost at all. Python gets some dislike, and there are a few significant projects trying to get off it. As a blanket statement I don't think dyn

File a bug with a repro? Chances are it'll get fixed if your benchmark is good.

As a counterpoint I have contacted Google Fi support four times and was very happy with the level of service. Though it's possible that all the issues I had was within the scope of the first line of defence, and if you outside of that

This is probably the hardest setting, yet most people seemed to have no trouble getting 8/8.

I have met Fabien a few times at work, he is a lovely human being. I don't want to be too presumptuous and speak for him, but I don't think he cares about making a profit from this. He just likes to write and wants people to read

If you double the size of pointers (64 bit, up from 32 bit) then your program will take up more heap. This is especially significant for languages where everything is a heap allocation.

You definitely do not want that. Vetted science should not go through a pipeline of what amounts to a low brow popularity contest. Hacker news might be somewhat better than reddit in this respect, but there's no way you want to subject

Fair points overall, except: > The stack-based C API is not comfortable to use. What is so uncomfortable about it? I think it's absolutely fantastic. There's nothing you can't do with it, and if you really want a heavyweig

But that's kind of my point. This is substantively different and is pretty serious. And no, I haven't seen any particularly unreasonable comments in this thread.

The suggestion from the link is that some people involved didn't fully understand what they were working on. And obviously they weren't able to keep word spreading in this case. But obviously a number of people must have known. I

Disclaimer: I work for Google. I also think that there is an anti-Google bias on hacker news, holding Google to a standard not applied to others and taking any excuse to roll out the same old tired rants in response to almost any Google pos

I feel people confuse being blunt with being rude. "This patch is crap. Stupid this silly that, and how many times have I said you can't break userland." vs. "I won't accept this patch as-is, or possibly at all. It

All my keys are on alpha keys, so pretty close to the home row. No worse that typing letters. As an aside, I developed my "snap" layout using a genetic algorithm run over the corpus of my programming career, then shifted around fo

Why do you need both snap and pop? I use something similar, but get by perfectly well with only one layer for all programming symbols. Seems your life would be a little easier if you didn't have to surrender another two keys for your p

Well there are situations where intrusive list pointers don't work well. If you don't control the class, then you simply can't put pointers in it. If most objects aren't ever in a list (eg. a million objects but only t

It's not really about adding up time saved, it's about staying in the flow. I think you can probably achieve that by being really good at almost any editor, but vim probably does it a little better than most and it has the advanta

I find this a bit defeatist. Estimating software projects is definitely possible, especially for less novel projects, and high-effort estimates will have higher fidelity than low-effort estimates. Few projects are truly novel. You can'
