One of my favorite articles on HN thus far. I have struggled with a few of these notions myself. It's nice to see another humble perspective.

It sounds like you're just jumping into web development when you say that. Adobe has been faster with release cycles than Macromedia. Often known as Hackromedia, they were not the powerhouse dev. studio it sounds like you're trying to push.

Honestly, I don't know. But I know a lot ignored it because it said "FREE iPad".

I doubt that capable programmers are going to be enticed by a FREE iPad. You would hire a programmer that came for the FREE iPad?

"Innovate or die, bitches." Adobe isn't perfect by any means, but their business decision to focus on one platform rather than another is no more selfish than any other software company I've seen. Apple having a "quality control" platform t

The technology is valid. It needs a better community and a standard associated with it. Flash is a great technology. HTML5+JS is a great technology. Adobe/Macromedia can be, at times, hack-y. Doesn't mean that they didn't manage to have a g

It's extremely clear that you have not developed in Flash. Flash isn't an extension of the CSI interface, so no, it doesn't do anything "for you". Please, don't wax your "knowledge" as fact. You know exactly what I mean. I do agree that Fla

Ugh. I hate this fallacy of composition. I think you know what he means, but it is easy to be the teacher's pet with a shiny apple of misinformation. Making complex animations (not a sliding nav, for example) is not easy in HTML5+JS. Sorry,

My favorite "gang mentality" moment is Jobs' refusal to implement Flash in favor of a "non-proprietary" method, such as HTML5. Killing a proprietary product with a MORE proprietary product is somehow a great moment in our technological revo

Doubtful. jQuery, CSS, HTML, JS or Flash? Flash is quicker development time hands down.

You then seemed to say that HTML5 doesn't actually let you create the effects exhibited in those websites. I corrected you and referred you to the modules. The side-step again. The examples that you gave (a vague reference to ADC) did n

How I love the "The Flash-hater side-step". If you read, I wasn't talking about adoption rates (although that is also an issue worth noting). You might have noticed that I mentioned that Flash brought about new innovations to the web. Most

jQuery and PNGs are actually not HTML5. I understand they aren't the same. jQuery is often cited as a "Flash killer" of sorts, just covering the bases. See the ADC for a pretty nice selection of examples which do actually rival Flash web

I need to see HTML5+JS perform as well as Flash doing multiple things. Sorry, sliding PNGs across the page with jQuery isn't really the same. If we're gonna go into debate about Flash vs. HTML5, I am gonna need to see more than simple equal

Give us Flash's source code. That's the problem. It is a problem, but I am having a hard time believing that perspective. The OOS community can create a player. Since the SWF format is inherently open there is nothing really stopping an

Flash has issues and anything the W3S and WHATWG do is without fault. Down with plugin architecture! All ideas and possible innovations that live outside of our dying, simple-minded, slow-moving, "One or None" religion should be killed! ch
