I was shocked at how minimal the impact was on Garmin, given that their customers are consumers who are trusting them with very personal data.

Ok, great, so now there is one more option that addresses your preference) but it still isn't really innovation. (I don't really follow how your comment related to the issue.)

They might use Fuschia to replace the Linux kernel in Android, but Android would remain the same from an end user or app developer perspective. They aren't just going to turf Android.

This could be good for competition, but it's hard to see it as being about innovation. Same as Microsoft copying Chrome and calling it Edge, users have another browser, now with MS telemetry etc. instead of Google. Good for user choic

Google's investments in the web has been massive. Your whole framing can be flipped on its head be pointing out that Google, unlike Amazon has been willing to make such huge investments in the one public platform we've got. Obvio

Great to see a company try to truly innovate in this space! For too long we see too many just copy Chrome, swap in their own telemetry, add some adblocking and then hawk it so aggressively. The one bright light remains Firefox and it is sad

All new extensions are manually vetted now, and there is manifest v3, but there has been a lot of concern about the effect of this on adblockers so progress has been slow.

Supporting that theory, I find that Chromebooks can get by with less RAM than their Windows equivalent (even when the Windows machine will only be used for the web, which is pretty common these days in my experience).
