Offhand, recently I've used NumPy, telnetlib, openpyxl, TkInter. I haven't used Lisp for a very long time, because of my (perhaps faulty) perception that some of these things (and the next one I will need) might not be there, or

Thanks for the links! I'll check them out. I like the "higher level" of Python libraries better than C or even Java, because I tend to write what most people would call prototype code. Small user base, small applications, and

Yeah, I read it. Can you explain how "red herrings" differ from "myths"? Is the distinction really that important? My point was that it is not just myths (or red herrings either) that are holding Lisp back. There are som

Thanks! Nothing would be more awesome than Lisp (or Scheme, I don't care) with easy transparent access to modern libraries.

This doesn't scratch my itch at all. I love Lisp but boring old Python has the libraries I need. EDIT: Based on a comment and downvote I suppose I didn't make my point clear above. I am saying that myths are not the only thing ho

Key part: Usenet was effectively a public space. Nobody had their hand on the OFF switch. Much less important part: Usenet was full of horrible behavior for many years before people started complaining about "Endless September." I

"the system can be fixed while remaining capitalistic" If that's what people are talking about, great. I'm not frightened of whatever Scandinavia is doing. I'm not frightened of the New Deal.

Parts of this are commonplace: "Fifty-seven percent of respondents worry about losing the respect and dignity they once enjoyed in their country." Sure. Decisions are made top-down, expertise is discounted, etc. The culture has d

Where does 'community' fit into the business picture? There is a corporate owner, and (eventually) there are some kind of advertisers or other customers. The volunteers who provide the content are not part of the business picture.

Good point. I work on laser amplifiers, and I struggle to get clear on what Planck said in 1899. I'm definitely not caught up with where physics was in 1920. Hearing casual observers talking about quarks or dark matter just makes me ru

The headline is misleading, but they immediately follow up with a qualification that makes the headline technically not wrong. They're saying just market value of the equity. That can be very different from market value of the enterpri

Can we try this out? Here's a proposed 'fact': "If you don't eat with us at mealtimes, your whole caloric intake will be sugar and oil. That's probably unhealthy in the long run." Is that a 'first or

I guess this is a nitpick, but I think by 1901 Planck had published his fix for the UV catastrophe. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultraviolet_catastrophe#Soluti... (Oddly, it looks like the term "ultraviolet cata

(I'm not a fluid flow person and this is probably not a very good comment.) Yeah, that seems likely. But sometimes it's difficult to draw the line between issues that are "purely theoretical" and issues that make a pract

Perhaps people are skeptical about the claim of originality for a straightforward algebraic manipulation that can be carried out and understood by middle school students. (As far as I can see, that is what the article claims.) Bright people

Who knows, but it's possible that this invention was originally meant kind of tongue-in-cheek. I think any mechanical designer who could understand how differential gears produce this result would also be aware that small errors (skidd
