They can be used for other currencies. For example namecoin must be getting a huge boost from all the bitcoin mining. My mining pools just throws in namecoins for me. I guess they can check the same hash against both systems.

I feel like this wouldn't jibe with conservation of energy. Unless the bird can eat in the air somehow. It just physically couldn't store enough fuel to fly to fix months straight, right?

I'm pretty confused about this. I thought the ACA plans through the exchanges don't take effect until January (or later?). So do you need to buy a plan now on the exchange? And then buy a separate plan to cover you until then?
