Out of curiosity, is there a third way? The two you mention are the big ones, I know, but your phrasing implies (perhaps unintentionally) the existence of at least one more.

Perhaps, but it’s easy to attribute malice to what is done by sheer incompetence. To me the situation reads like he bought his favorite toy and is playing with it until it breaks.

I read a psychology study a long while back (might be able to find it idk) that I think would agree with this line of thinking but with a slightly different mechanism. The paper argued that we have an internal risk level that we like to dri

Thanks! I know some basics about DP and have adapted some of their results for my non-privacy related work, but it’s not an area I know much about the cutting edge of. Your blog post inspired me to catch up on some results from the past few

I feel like certain dramas are just more forgiving. Like even if the prose is bad and the characters are flat in a sci-fi or fantasy novel, the concept of the world being explored can still be interesting. I love classic SciFi but I don’t g

Not to mention how many medications are patented. The patents do serve a purpose — taking a drug to market is both incredibly expensive and has a high failure rate, so a company needs a guarantee of some kind of return to take that chance.

It might have had to be rediscovered in the West. I remember learning that DaVinci’s autopsies were controversial because they were considered desecrations of someone’s body and therefore disgusting and unholy.

I feel like this has happened with my grandmother. She’s in her 90s and mostly still there, but she has outlived my grandfather and most of their friends. She’s also quite feeble and didn’t leave the house, and broke her hip this year (and

That empathy and taste also comes from repeatedly playing with each other. It’s a lot easy to anticipate where the song is going if you know what moves your band mates like to employ.

Yeah if you have insight into why a field is interesting from a younger age, you are more likely to be interested in it yourself as well. That also goes the other way. My dad was a lawyer, and I know a little more about the law and legal pr

I think part of it is also the nature of the research. As an engineer, the use of statistics in papers I’ve written to compare outcomes of the proposed method vs competitors is rudimentary, but that is for a number of reasons: 1. Normally t

Sure, but you know what has state? ODEs and their discrete-time analogue, recurrence relations. You first meet ODEs in calculus. Even if you say “who cares about continuous time, my computer is fundamentally discrete!” you won’t have a conc

I think better tooling may help, but part of the issue is that the tools are asked to do the wrong thing because you’re thinking about the problem wrong. In the article, they cite the hot hand research: for a long time, the understanding wa
