MapD tries to cache compressed versions of the "hot" columns of a table in GPU RAM, which could be up to 256GB per node across 8 GPUs. If necessary though it can stream the data from CPU RAM - of course such queries won't be

The main focus of MapD is scan queries where you might need to look at billions of rows to do the group bys, joins and aggregates to answer a query. Indexes don't tend to do well for such use cases. In the future we may add indexes su

We tried and it seemed to be working fine. Please email us at info at mapd dot com and we'll make sure to send you one. Also would be good to know what steps you went through so we can fix if necessary.

OP here. The demo is running off of the equivalent of a single K40. We can use 8 K80s to scale to billions of records with the same response time in milliseconds. And database workloads are often heavily memory bound so the terabytes per se

Handles fast append (insert) - can stream large volumes of data in while running queries (one of the advantages of executing on GPU - you leave the CPU free to handle ingest). Delete/Update in-flight.

It can do most of the basic expressions on strings (i.e. like/ilike) and can do the standard time operations (date_trunc, extract), with the goal of being fully SQL-92 compliant this year. You have to remember that many of our customer

I'm not an expert on FPGAs, but in general they have much less memory bandwidth than GPUs. Since many queries are memory-bound, I would suspect that would make them less suitable than GPUs for generic SQL.

Based on Nvidia's Pascal launch I think you could argue that not only are GPUs getting faster but that the range of change just dramatically accelerated (due to a process node shrink and introduction of super-fast HBM2 memory).

Not all GPU databases are created equal. Notwithstanding the amazing functionality of Postgres and the impressive work of the PGStrom team, afaik they are still limited to a single GPU and do not cache data on board the GPU. It certainly ma
