Yeah, that absolutely didn't compute for me either. If it really was the case with no thoughts needed for transactions or correctness I would have started to split my monolithic apps years ago. Its when your data model is complex enoug

It reminds me of the scene from Foundation when analysis of a politicians multi day stay and conversation amounted to no words. He had literally said nothing.

Didn't Steve Yegge talked about something like this a couple of years ago [0]. This is sort of a version of that. A fantastic thing if this really gets going. Surprised that this is the firsts I'm hearing of this. [0] https:/

This. Nots sure why this would be hard to understand. If you have a long running project you now have few choices none of which are good. Keep using Bootstrap 3 for older work and use Bootstrap 4 for newer feature and make things inconsiste

Do you mean the antibiotics keeps them healthy and in turn bigger or antibiotics has some growth hormone type effect?

▲

Yup that would probably be one of the big thing in the whole antibiotic crisis and just making sure the farm environment is good once you can't rely on just flooding them with antibiotic and keep them alive.

I don't understand these things well. But if true this would be really bad. LZ4 is everywhere because it was completely free and I think most of Zstandard's real work was pre-facebook by just Yann alone. Now to have its hand tied

Now here things gets really interesting [0]. And the fact that the claim is that higher level of compression has negligible impact on decode speed making Kraken really impressive for one time compression and lots of decompression situation.

Yeah read about Kraken a while ago and found the encode.ru thread you pointed. Its unfortunate that we can't compare that side by side. Those guys seem another of those compression geniuses. Overall the world of compression is moving v

Yes. I forgot about xxHash :). I think it was created as part of checksumming on LZ4 (not entirely sure). That is another amazing part of his work. He is producing this things xxHash, FSE, Huff0 that are state of the art projects in their o

Thats what I was thinking. I haven't found any validation or even the rationale behind lzfse's supposed lower power usage. I can think of two things. 1. Apple tried to write a fast and reasonably compressible version of LZ4 thus i

The majority of the work was done by a single person though. I think by the time facebook joined the majority design was done. Granted he doesn't seem to be like a normal person so doesn't matter that way. But for compression isn&

Not sure I agree. The 8 MB is the recommended upper limit so I don't think anyone is planning to use it for the web traffic. I think its designed to be faster and have better compression even at lower window size though not sure how lo

I think you should look at the author's blog [0]. There is lots of in depth explanation of not just what he is doing but how he got there, the failed steps, the intermediate steps. [0] http://fastcompression.blogspot.in/

I have been waiting for this to hit 1.0 and more importantly get popular so that I can use it everywhere. I am really a fan of Yann Collet's work. These are extremely impressive work specially when you consider that lz4 seems to be bet

Lobbying from what I understand is a more polite form of corruption for the most part. I think in the parts of the world where corruption is more direct (bribes) you actually have to pay a lot more to get this kind of returns.

Yeah. I have read about zfs to some degree before but somehow missed this until a couple of days ago. For all its flexibility this looks a very bad limitation. I think this and rebuild time (again related to vdev width) makes zfs very easy

Lighter yes. Thinner why? Your thinnest carry bag already is more than double the thickness of most laptops with the padding and all. The only advantage! I see of even thinner laptop is that they are easier to drop on the floor.

When log(n) is within the word size the hashmap lookup for the most part is actually constant i.e., few specific machine operation. A generic log(n) algorithm still requires log(n) distinct operation for the most part however small that num

The car is the one that I was thinking. But can that single project use up that much R&D budget? You need time to scale any project even R&D. A quick check suggest Tesla's 2010-15 R&D budget is less than 3B. I guess Apple h
