Same, when I flip through colorschemes there are plenty of simply ridiculous ones. I'm looking to implement some sort of voting to make this better - so that the actually-used schemes float to the top, but using the Google+ Button API makes

I know it's a tech thing, but it's a really good idea in the practice of launch posts to explain what the thing is and what it does, at least to some degree.

Yep, https://github.com/mapbox/tilestream There is a TileStream Hosting service that has integration with a CDN & DropBox, stats, etc. It uses the open version and just adds glue code to services.

Maybe your definition of usable is a bit different than mine, but we've done two maps of DC: http://tiles.mapbox.com/mapbox#!/map/dc-bright http://tiles.mapbox.com/mapbox#!/map/dc-nightvision The first is 17MB, the second is 57MB. One c

Recent updates (if you haven't updated since 0.3.0 or so) have doubled & tripled export speed by a bunch of optimizations, especially metatiling. If you really want to parallelize, you can run the ./index.js command in the source versio

You're right by definition - TileMill doesn't serve maps. Right now it generates them, and TileStream serves generated maps. It's extremely fast and stable, but inherently limiting. That's not to say this won't change in the future :)

There's a VirtualBox image as well. I wouldn't recommend cygwin unless you want a weekend of hell.

Launching a service called 'Clout' with a competitor called 'Klout', in which the only difference is that it measures a different social network, but in the same way? Really?

Gutsy. But you've already got a sign up page and a precise price tag on a product that only has one screen-shotable page so far?

Oof, looks the application is awesome but the tone is Yahoo Answers all over again, when everyone wishes it were like ask.metafilter.com or quora.com. Needs more community management and focus on quality over quantity.

Recent behavior has indicated that they've moved from 'subsidizing innovation' to 'making boatloads of internet cash' now that the stock market expects them to be infinitely profitable.

Had the feeling a bunch of years ago that Google wanted the web to be a vibrant, creative, interesting place. But, I guess online shopping and Angry Birds is the real objective.

Totally agreed. 500px's lack of an API is reflective of its whole purpose, it seems: after uploading photos, I had no idea whether the original version was stored. The embeds have one photo size. It's all very focused on being 'in the site'

Much the same with Google Plus. It takes serious effort for growth and the infinite strength of 'user needs' not to clobber a good interface with lots of cruft that most users don't want.

Any indication of what you get out of this service? I know the fundamentals, but the site's sneak-peek content consists of a TextMate screenshot and documentation. That's all push - what's the pull?

Wow, gem install && run the install utility and 'it just works.' What a cool project, and impressive that it just does what it claims to do, well and in such a jazzy manner.

They'd certainly disagree with the person who said that, but it doesn't seem to be me. Sorry for the snark, but you're putting words into my mouth: I said that scarcity has value, hence the popularity of 'limited runs' of prints and albums.

Why? What they're selling is not just the novelty, but the scarcity of an object. Treating these like talking greeting cards is like treating art as paper and ink.

Seems relatively simple. This Frank Smit guy loves anime in a borderline-creepy way and is, like the original developer, not a native english speaker. [1]: http://61924.nl/04-11-2011/ubuntu-10-dot-10.html [2]: http://61924.nl/about.html

I'll say it now: Mike Bostock is easily on par with Ashkenas, Holowaychuck, or Dahl as far as productivity and genius. d3 is a mindtrip but über-powerful in much the same way as Backbone, and Polymaps is the future.
