Are Mac laptops still glued together? My 2013 MBP needed a new battery, which required replacing the following as one unit: battery, keyboard, top case, trackpad. The reason is that it was all one blob. (And then the charging circuit on the

I don't know, is it? I mean, it's often not the convenient choice, but there is still choice. The choice to "license" cough access to an ebook is a valid one, if made with awareness for what exactly that means. I think

The point wasn't that they sold something they weren't supposed to, but that they felt it reasonable to "un-sell" something after someone has received it. It showed everyone that electronic purchases can be yoinked away

Ever since Amazon removed copies of Orwell's "1984" from people's Kindles after sale, it's served as a reminder that ownership is a fickle thing. https://gizmodo.com/amazon-secretly-removes-1984-from

No, Kobos are a better choice. Much more consumer-friendly, even if the default book store is still DRM-encumbered.

Thanks for the paper, will check it out! (Still skeptical that we should encourage LLM summarization though, suspect people would gain more and actually learn things from reading papers.)

Whoops, I stand corrected. I thought I had read it elsewhere (news, I assume) that most countries would not see the change. Looking back... sigh.

Well, the "Gulf of America" nonsense is also shown here, in brackets after "Gulf of Mexico." So it seems like they're not content with just keeping it to the US as originally stated.

Oh, true enough. Or at least, by the time the battery gets low, the whole thing should be replaced anyway. As you say, depending on detector.

Smoke detectors usually have something like a 10-year usable life, and should have a sticker to that effect along with its manufacture date. I've had a couple that when they aged out, went straight to full-on alarm beeping.

Back in the stone age, you just needed someone that would let you connect to their server. The whole point is that it's distributed, not a central, closed system. That server might have limits on the groups they wanted to host through

I wonder too if the reflective markers are also messing with self-driving vehicles that hit stopped fire trucks. It's been a few years, but this article on Teslas hitting fire vehicles was sobering. https://www.wired.com

I see that one of the issues given with uxn is that it isn't efficient, nor self-hosting. I wonder how they'd feel about something like MirageOS, where OCaml is used to create unikernels that contain just what is needed. The appli

I have to wonder, why can't their wi-fi be disabled? Is it one of those scenarios where it is being used to support other ISP customers in your area? My ISP (note: also owned by my employer) doesn't have this, so the modem I'

Oh, I hadn't thought to reach for Reader mode, that's a good point for people who are using closer to a stock config. Of course, rendering a text blog page should be trivial, but... Google. I expect little different there.
