I see systems with various system-level vulnerabilities all the time for work, and try to assist my clients (internal project teams) in prioritizing fixes. Besides the usual CVSS scores, I try to focus first on what is being used or exposed

I'm not doing it remotely, but have an Odroid HC2 set up as a sort of single-drive personal NAS on my home network. Restic backing up to there is absolutely stellar, including being able to mount a snapshot for selective recovery if ne

That's a valid choice too, to be sure. As long as you know there are options.

I think you can get most of the benefits of the enhanced protection but setting specific features yourself instead of the one "do everything" flag. I have 2FA required on regular logins for example, which can be a Yubikey or authe

One area that I think Haskell (and some other languages) are good in security terms, is that the functionality present when deployed is pretty much all you're going to get. What I mean by this is that you're not tempted to use som

I'd be trying to keep my IPA out of the keyboard, La Fin du Monde is sometimes pretty fizzy. Ohhhh, you mean that IPA. Way less tasty, probably more useful in this context.

I've seen a different use case for XMPP that I thought was interesting. Basically, a public-facing site uses it for running customer support chat bots, providing FAQs and the like. Under the hood, initiating a chat is basically launchi

It's been a long time since I've bought a new camera, but I'm amazed that this would not be the case. My 2008-vintage Pentax K200D has the option to save JPEG and associated RAW images with every shot, as well as (IIRC) a but

The nice thing with the lists of multiple randomized words is that there are so many more combinations possible. The numbers, which will be individual digits for most people, add relatively little here. Using EFF's dice-ware page ( htt

Several do, I think. I use org-roam, which extends org-mode on Emacs. The files are org-mode (very much like Markdown), but there is a SQLite DB that enables speedy search.

Do you mean for fetching? I've got offlineimap set up for mine, and it's primarily a background task, because Emacs is not dealing with it directly. Using mu4e, it is more of an interface to that local store with its built-in sear

True enough, thanks for the info. I can't complain either way, whatever suspend mode I have works well and quickly. Hibernate does work (all under Linux here as a rule). I'll have to try powercfg next time I boot into Windows.

I've played with Neuron too, and liked it. I'm using org-roam at the moment, but will keep an eye on Emanote. One of the better advertisements for Neuron is the author's own notes being posted online as exported HTML.

If I were to look at replacing a Linux distro in-place, would it make sense to try doing most of the configuration in a VM? That is, if I did replicate the more important pieces of my current environment, could I then install NixOS and repl
