Before you started to work remotely, didn’t you have people to share your time with outside work? If not, well, that’s the issue (and not remote working).

Imagine your future self (let’s say you with 45 years old). What would that person prefer? A career in software engineering with 20 years of experience and no master’s degree, or a career in software engineering with 18 years of experience

Let me play the game. If covid was caused by a lab leak, I think the right question to ask is: who benefits (did benefit) by the leak? And remember that number of dead people is something that governments don’t care about (i.e., governments

Talented engineers know their value. It doesn’t matter where they live. Do you really think that a talented ukranian or mexican developer would offer their services cheap? They are probably realistic enough to not charge 100% what Silicon V

At my university they thought me: tons of mathematics, electronics, automata theory, compilers, and a bunch of stuff that “I don’t use on my day to day”. They didn’t teach me debuggers, profiling, or bash. I’m glad they did that. Because I

A degree takes already 3 or 4 years. In order to incorporate this “missing semester” universities would have to either a) remove existing material to make space for it, or b) extend the degree one more semester. I don’t think universities s

Meh. I use the right tool for the job, and most of the time, a simple print statement put in the right place beats any debugger. Certainly the debugger has helped me in the past, but maybe one or two times only. Besides, putting a print sta

Indeed. While I think learning algorithms and ds is a non-negotiable thing, in 90% of the companies out there in 90% of the situations one will never have to write a binary search from scratch or implement a queue from scratch. On the other

It’s not about being mathematically perfect about performance. In any given team, area, organization one can easily point out who are the good ones.

Problem is loyal != performant. The most valuable engineers want it all, so they will probably leave because they can.

The problem is that interaction face-to-face takes at least two people. You may like it and you would do it any day of the week, but the person in front of you may hate it. So, obviously the win-win scenario is to be flexible and let the pe

Some food for thought: seems like the majority prefer to WFH, now think of all the coworkers you were having lunch with, how many of them would prefer to have lunch with you if they were not forced to go to the office? Not many. Don’t get

Hard to believe that 100% of the teams have members that live all in the same city. In all the companies I’ve worked for that wasn’t the case (and I have worked for small and medium size ones )

Don’t install many things on your Mac. Use virtual machines or containers as much as you can. You never know if ‘npm install’ (and similars) is going to take over your computer.

For me, at least, the worst part of working from the office (not matter how many days) is that it forces you and your family to live in a big city or near one. 2 days per week at the office and suddenly you cannot live anymore in a remote t

That’s like asking “How often do people have to eat strawberries?” It’s up to each one to do overtime or not. If you value more money than free time, you probably don’t mind doing overtime. If you have other commitments in life (e.g., kids)

I don’t do it. I value more my free time than extra money. I couldn’t care less if we miss the deadline because non-realistic deadlines are due to incompetent managers. Why should I spend more time working if it’s my manager’s fault?

What silo? You think GitLab’s employees work in “silos” and get nothing done? You think Linux is a terrible kernel because people who build it work 100% remote? You seem to lack professionalism.
