We're at least as bad in Australia and quite possibly worse given the number of Americans who speak Spanish. You certainly don't need a second language to get a Ph.D. here.

My personal prediction is that Windows 7 will be a big hit for Microsoft. I installed the RC on a 3yo media PC with 1GB RAM and it’s really been quite good – it found all the hardware including slightly obscure things like dual tv tuners an

The 35K might be justified if it was a rare collectible in which case it's an investment decision rather than an ostentatious purchase. I own a 1967 Breitling Navitimer that cost less than a tenth of that amount, but was still a lot (for me

I think he's predicting that the current resurgence of proprietary communications channels (Twitter, Facebook, et al) will inevitably be replaced by public protocols (Wave perhaps?). I hope he's right.

I agree with your analogy, and it indicates the right thing to do here. Give the refund and ask people to delete the ebook themselves. The doctor wouldn't break into your house and take the pills out of the medicine cabinet.

Why go to the Pirate Bay when you can download it for free from Australia? http://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/o/orwell/george/ The copyright has expired here, in Canada and any number of other places. You poor Americans really got screwed by t

That's not quite true. Microsoft had a Hotmail plugin in Outlook Express that was "beta" for at least 5 years. Microsoft simply used the term as an excuse to avoid supporting a product that people don't pay for. Sounds pretty similar to me.

I worked as a carny at the Perth Royal Show for 2 weeks when I was 15. Pay was peanuts, but part of the job involved wearing a horror mask and jumping out at people from the dark with a pitchfork, scaring them senseless. Not sure I've ever

Agreed. It's interesting to compare the tenor of Musk's post with Eberhard's posts on his blog http://www.teslafounders.com which IMHO are didactic and often petty.

What a blatent, self interested diatribe. What's his complaint exactly? That the platform is too easy to develop for? That middle men like him aren't getting a cut of the action? That we don't have to deal with the dinosaur carriers directl

I think Flex trades off user experience to make developers' lives easier though. That's never the right choice IMHO. Every Flex app I've seen, no matter how simple, starts with a "Loading" popup. Flex apps also notoriously overreach by reim

"Acting as an exit node provides the operator with plausible deniability, since they will have no idea what data is passing through." This is a weak defence at best and a huge risk to whoever acts as an end node. What if someone further u

I'd like to see an iPhone hooked up to a model plane/helicopter. Now that it's got a compass in addition to the GPS and acceleromter, it's a potential autopilot with video capability. Poor man's UAV/cruise missile perhaps?

I'd be very surprised if HTML 5 gains mass market share within 2 years. Unfortunately, the majority of businesses simply standardize on the browser that ships with the desktop OS they use. That's why IE6 is still so pervasive, as most busin

The demo is impressive, but Flash absolutely can do all those things, albeit in Actionscript rather than Javascript. In fact that's the reason Flash has largely replaced all the other video plugins like Quicktime and Windows Media Player.

They are mostly unenforceable here in Australia but I've still seen them in a few contracts and never agree to them. Far more common are clauses that prohibit overt poaching of clients or staff to a new venture which is more reasonable IMHO

Depends on what you're studying. Subjects like medicine, dentistry and chemistry need extensive lab facilities and highly skilled, often personal tuition. That's going to cost a lot no matter where it's done. On a broader level you also nee

Aquiring a company that's losing money is hardly "free". After Nick Leeson's rogue trading spree, ING bought Barings for £1, but they then inherited a good chunk of its liabilities. The author's advice is trite. Who would ever go knocking d

On the other hand, try "4.7L/100km to mpg" in both. Alpha understands the question and reformats it nicely but then doesn't calculate the answer. Google just gives the answer.
