Apple didn't drop their DRM because of Amazon. They wanted to drop it before then, but the publishers in order to promote an alternative to iTunes made DRM-free music available to Amazon first. Apple dropped it as soon as they were all

There was something similar to this when cars first came out. You'd buy the engine and the frame and hire a coach building company to build the body and the interior.

What about Hammerspoon? http://www.hammerspoon.org It's the successor to Mjolnir listed on that Stackexchange post. A group of people forked it because Mjolnir was a bit fiddly since you need to use a Lua package manager to

Bowie's first albums didn't catch on at all. It wasn't until he decided to change his presentation and style that he became successful. I recommend seeing "David Bowie & The Story of Ziggy Stardust" which talks

I saw him live for his Sound + Vision tour. That was pretty incredible. It truly was a blend of the two as he put together some great visuals to go with each of the songs. Plus, it was a "greatest hits" kind of tour so you got a w

Canada Post is far more reliable for me than UPS. In my building, I've had UPS say that they "missed me", when I know for a fact I was home all day. This has happened on multiple occasions.

Plus, Amazon Video is only in the US (and I think the UK). Amazon is pretty bad at rolling out services internationally. Here in Canada, we still can't buy MP3s from Amazon, despite the fact that we were told "soon" years ago

UPS has a habit of just leaving a "sorry I missed you" sheet at my building. Several times, I've been home the entire day the delivery happened, but they never buzzed my apartment. They just left without contacting me and say

One can be "mind-wandering", but still mindful. One meditation technique is to let yourself think random thoughts, notice the thought, and let it go.

You can also tell quite a bit based upon the citations. I've been able to guess at who was the original author based on how the paper was written/structured and the citations.

It's been around since 2004, but only really gained momentum when the iPhone app store came out. Since you couldn't have styled text, people would use apps that supported Markdown on their iPhone and once processed, see it styled.

My problem is him collecting data on people who aren't even using the service. They collect data on any site with a Facebook button. I don't even use the service and he has my data. I'm not getting any value from his product,

Another point, Pro Tools HD is $99/year and $199 for the first year. In that case, $199 is reasonable.

No, I'm talking about generating Julia code from elsewhere. I'll derive some math in another program (e.g., Maple, Mathematica, SymPy) and output code that represents that math. I can't do that with Julia right now.

Last I checked, some things that can be vectorized, but aren't in LAPACK/BLAS weren't particularly fast. There's even one example from a few years ago on Stack Overflow where it was at least an order of magnitude slower

Good to know. I've been looking at it, but not seriously. It's been more keeping an eye on it. I was hoping that Fortress would go somewhere, but it died. My other problem is code generation. I can't generate Julia code yet.

True, but the problem I had (which I will admit was back in '99) is that there's no standard one. So, if you need to solve a system of ODEs and a linear system, you're invariably needing to convert between the two.

It's still faster than the alternatives. Things like Scipy/Numpy are more alternatives to Matlab as is R. Julia isn't fast enough yet. C/C++ doesn't have the built-in matrix/vector support. The latter is what I

True, but it's regulated in many western countries. I think it's regulated in the UK, much of the US (including I think California where many of these companies are), Canada, and apparently France. A self-taught developer might ap

Those are defined exceptions in the law. There's also a kind of engineer that deals with physical plants for big buildings, I think they're called Stationary Engineers. Those are also an exception.
