I think what you're looking for is Ctrl+O, which allows you to exit insert mode, insert ONE command only (e.g. 4k), and immediately enter the insert mode again

The question should be "how effective is it" not whether you can or not. Sure you can read a lot of programming resources using your phone and perhaps even write and run some programs, but it would not be as effective as practicin
